ive tried this before, while you cannot make it directly a 2nd monitor, you can use a program (sorry forgot the name ill look for it then edit this post if i find it) that lets you use your mouse and keyboard on your desktop as the mouse and keyboard of your laptop, and that way its like its another monitor but its just running off the laptop not your desktop.
 
its works with you moving your mouse to the left of right then it knows your on the laptop so then you use it just as it was another monitor
