PSU can overheat?

Well I ran some stability tests and I suspect my PSU(EVGA G2 550W) got so hot my PC rebooted, is that likely or is something else wrong? o3o

Nothing wrong really according to the CPU and motherboard sensors but I touched the case and it was very hot and even hotter where the PSU was... o3o (note the PSU is at the top and hot air goes into it which may make it even hotter...)

The intake is pointed downwards towards the motherboard because there is no other places for it to get air... o3o

I would see if the same occurs when the PSU is out of the case. if it does, it's the issue.

Well I suspected it was the PSU after I tried to increase voltage for the CPU because I tough it was unstable at 4.4GHz but actually that made it reboot even faster so now I am testing with reduced voltage instead!

That looks like a fine motherboard to OC on, but do check that you're not triggering its over power or over current protection.

I believe it's not the PSU, sure it gets hot but it never get hot enough to the point of reboot especially if the fan is running properly on the PSU. Load default settings and see where it goes from there.

I am currently testing it with reduced voltages so I hope it passes now without errors, freezes or rebooting. If it cannot pass then I most set it back to 4.3GHz unless it is a good idea to keep it at 4.4GHz? I mean it is only issues if I set it at 100% load for 2+ hours... o3o (GTA V did not manage to make it crash...)

Ah! Well that's suspicious. Do test with the PSU out of the case, if it still overheats, RMA.

 

If it doesn't, you need more airflow in your case, I would get a case fan to put in front if the front has airflow holes. Otherwise, it may be wise to run the computer with the side panel off.

It can happen. A good PSU used within specs is unlikely to, but there's no failure-free hardware. And part of being good quality is having adequate protection in the event of failures, like shutting itself off before damaging anything, which would have no value if failure was not a possibility

 

I'd say follow the clues. If the PSU feels warm, test what happens with it outside the case. Also check what happens with everything else (as @Energycore said, it could be the motherboard's protections being triggered). Now, you typically don't have direct measures of the relevant variables here, but you could try to generate comparable loads on the PSU's 12v rail by loading the CPU in one case and the GPU in another, and see if the heating-shutting down happens in both cases (likely PSU problem) or only when you load the CPU (likely motherboard or CPU problem). It's still not easy to make sure that the load is comparable, but if you have a kill-a-watt style power meter to check power drawn from the wall, you can at least do it approximately.

In that kind of configuration, the PSU is acting like a type of exhaust. If you have a rear fan, you should set that fan to a higher speed to take off some of the heat going into the PSU.

Well it rebooted again but it took much longer with lower voltages, yet I am confused on why the reboot happen when I stress test and not when I play games like GTA V which consumes both CPU and GPU... (yes GTA V is eating up so much CPU it is close to the same load as the stress tests...)

Yes it is at 50% to 80%

a few things I think you should do.

1, upgrade your case. Get ome with a bottom mounting psu, and at least 3 fans pre installed.

2. Try facing the fan downwards instead of at the motherboard when you get your new case . a PSU fan is designed to withdraw heat from within the psu (I think) so if it is blowing on the motherboard, then that will cause the whole pc to overheat.

I am now more convinced these reboots is caused by the Windows 10 Anniversary Update...
