Are you drunk?!?… you can’t be serious.

I am not going to deny the fact that it’s too old for modern gaming, but to say it was never a gaming card is surprising from a member of the forum. The PS4 pro has a better gpu (like one step up) but slower cpu, and you arenot playing modern games on that either.

I think the real benefit of the PS4pro is going to be that the games were tailored to it, so the experience should be pretty easy going.

You'll be fine with a consumer grade motherboard. I have two unraid servers currently and both run ASUS boards. One is a B350 and the other is a B450, they have both been running for years and have been solid. As far as adding drives I wouldn't worry about the number of sata ports instead look for an LSI 9207-8 but it has to be flashed to IT MODE. You can find these all over ebay already flashed, just make sure to get a genuine LSI card or the Dell version. Make sure to point or add a small fan to the heatsink though, they run hot. These will let you use a sas to sata cable and make cable management a bit easier. I pass the onboard sata controller into the windows VM that runs my cameras so I can hotswap and it has direct access to the drives.

For additional SATA ports, regardless of what mobo you go with, get a HBA (host bus adapter), they can be found on eBay for ~40 bucks, at least in the USA.

Dell H310 flashed to IT mode is a good option, and at the 40-50 dollar price point they will come with SAS to SATA break out cables that are required. This way you don’t have to worry about mobo SATA ports at all, just get whatever mobo works best for your situation.

    Two things:
    1. It's really weird that the mATX would support ECC while the ATX doesn't, they should be the same motherboard in a different form factor. What the heck, MSI?

    2. In addition to what @LIGISTX said about an HBA, you shouldn't need to worry about ECC for a basic home server.

Ertman reacted to LIGISTX in HomeServer Motherboard consumer grade
To add info about ECC, it’s not required, it’s just recommended. Truenas and ZFS is no more prone to bit flip issues then any other OS, and unraid is even less of an issue.

ZFS stores checksum info in RAM, so the old school idea was a bit flip in ram could lead to a “scrub of death”. Turns out this wasn’t really a thing, and nothing to worry about. Unraid doesn’t even have such a function, so it’s not even a potential issue.

ECC protects data in flight in on a file system like unraid; this helps keep corruption down and integrity up, but it’s likely not a big issue. I do run ECC, but I can 1) afford it 2) decided I want to use ZFS to keep my data in tact for virtually ever™, and 3) I personally decided it was worth it to me due to 1) and 2). If you don’t find it worthwhile to you, nothing wrong with that; certainly makes the setup easier.

Also, I hesitate to acknowledge it because it seems almost like bait, but referring to Mario Kart Wii as "the OG Mario Kart" is kind of ridiculous as there were 5 previous games in the series before it and if you ask many people Mario Kart Wii was the worst one up to that point.

Some of these cards can be had for ~50% of retail or even less, does that change your perspective?

    Still a gamble either way.

~50% is roughly the point where I start to consider this type of stuff.  However anymore I think it's rare to find stuff at this price point in this category these days.

Keep the B450. It doesn't make sense to buy a new motherboard when it's the end of the line for AM4. I just installed a 5600 in a ASRock A320M Motherboard and it works perfectly with only a bios update.

Honestly, unless you're wanna put a RTX 4090 on it or a ultra fast SSD for content production dont worry, at all.

    TL;DR;

I have a RTX 3080 and a RTX 2060 on a Asus X570, and they both run at x8 speeds, that means that my RTX 3080 runs at the speed of your PCI-E gen 3.0 x16 slot since PCI-E speeds doubles every generation, with little to no performance loss whatsoever. Unless you're running a AMD Ryzen with integrated graphics that will halve your PCI bandwidth (to x8) plus a high end RTX 4000 series or RX 7000 series or you have a crazy setup like mine.

Also, DirectStorage is something that is talked sometimes but not close to become reality, we dont have any game on PC that leverage that technology or that is planning to implement it on the future, actually we dont even have the technology implemented on PCs. So I wouldn't worry that the next few years we would have lots of games running on it. I have friends running games on spinning rust 😛 and myself have games stored on SATA SSDs... Forcing everybody to buy new motherboards + extremelly fast SSDs for game storage overnight wont be a thing. A SSD that can handle PCI-E Gen 4 speeds + has at least 1TB to store games is very expensive compared to your run of the mil SATA SSD and not in the same world as a 1TB HDD. I would wager that it would take a long time before DirectStorage became a thing, we first need to have affordable storage that is fast enough and today those kinds of speeds are a niche.

Sony and Microsoft can do that on consoles because they have one kind of SSD on their systems, on the Xbox you have to buy the proprietary expansion card and on Sony side only specific NVMe SSDs can be used. But as you can see the storage on those systems is pretty small for today standard, with the expansion card that costs another console you can only have 3TB (1TB + 2TB) on the Xbox and even less on the PS since you cannot run modern games on external storage. We have SATA SSDs with more than 30x that size on PC and the possibility to have more than 10 drives on a single consumer system.

GamersNexus did a video about this exact issue with a RTX 3080 and some difference sits in the single digit FPS but on most titles the difference is margin of error:

You can actually run a RTX 2080 Ti, the top of the line for the RTX 2000 series or a RTX 3070 (they are basically the same card) on a PCI-E 2.0 x16 or on a PCI-E 3.0 x8 and expect at most 3% of performance difference. We are talking about half your MB speeds... https://www.techpowerup.com/review/nvidia-geforce-rtx-2080-ti-pci-express-scaling/

If you run a last gen top tier card, yeah, you maybe get 1% more performance, i dont think its worth it. Anything lower wont benefit at all. About storage? Without direct storage the only benefit in going faster is loading times, linus did a blind test on it aswell and some people even tought that SATA was the fastest one...

With all of the changes in the current situation, it's almost at the point where even three years down the line is the far future. The only thing that's is almost a guarantee is the case and even THAT is not a promise, IF you're a competitive gamer running AAA games.
The rest of us can get along on some faily old hardware and you'll be surprised at the top tier companies running WinXP here in late 2022.

Plex transcoding at 1080p worked fine on my Ivy Bridge dual core CPU so Intel Quad would seem like a good option here. It depends on the lifespan you have in mind - that would likely be fine for 6 years. 10 years? I'd probably go 6 core now, just to potentially avoid any need to upgrade the system later on.

I'd probably stick with an Intel build, simply as there's more choice in mATX motherboards vs AMD - that was a requirement for me and I couldn't find anything AMD based that had all of the features I wanted, so I stuck with an Intel build so I could get what I wanted.

If this is the last generation of consoles, it will have nothing to do with availability. The DEMAND is why availability is non existent not lack of production. The PS5 is one of the best selling consoles EVER.

Your basically suggesting that they just put a hold on PS5 development because it’s popular. Your ideas of introducing new hardware is just going to make things worse. You essentially want them to catchup to demand by going slower and spending a lot of money.

I mean this in good fun:

The game developers reasons for developing for the PS5 is the same as it was for the PS4 when it launched.

Also, the PS5 is outselling the PS4. I am taking a guess here, but I am thinking you have a PS4 and haven’t been able to buy a PS5 yet, and that’s why you are pushing this so hard.... am I close?

Ertman got a reaction from Kilrah in Why doesnt Microsoft & Sony go to Intel & Nvidia for chips during the shortage?
    1) Neither Intel or Nvidia have competitive products (cpu+gpu package) available NOW, let alone a couple years ago when the console were being designed and they were making dev kits.

    2) Nvidia can’t keep up with demand NOW, so they wouldn’t be any better than AMD.

    3) Intel doesn’t have a working more efficient process node.

    4) The console makers can’t make the switch to a completely different architecture during the console run for many reasons including some already mentioned by other posters. How games and the OS is coded isn’t like windows or Linux. The architecture in an intel/amd cpu are different, the gpu architecture in an AMD/Nvidia/intel gpu chip are different. This gets even more complicated when going to Arm.

You ask about emulation. That’s not going to be all that possible yet, but it’s also not a good strategy until you further away from launch, unless of course you like console prices approaching $1500 with poor power consumption. Just on a design and implementation, you are talking a minimum of 2 years, unless one of these companies is sitting on tech that’s a generation ahead that sips power.

Maybe the PS6 generation will have more options.

Pretty big difference between a mic being built-in to the controller and needing to be plugged in.
