Hi guys! So... This computer of mine has been a long time in the making. For the past 5 years, I have been dreaming up new ways to improve my computer. The first computer I ever had was a Dell 530s. It was a hand-me-down from my parents who had gotten sick and tired of Windows Vista. Link here!
    https://www.overstock.com/Electronics/Dell-Inspiron-530S-Core-Duo-Desktop-Computer-Refurbished/4239750/product.html
    SPECS:
Core 2 Duo at a WHOPPING two cores, two threads, 1.8 GHz.
    4 gigs of DDR2
    a 500 GB hard drive
    Laughable internal graphics

So, as a 12 year old kid, I LOVED this thing. I could play minecraft at 30 FPS with all of the optifine settings turned down to the minimum. I was in LOVE. I even added ram, bumped up to 6 gigs and then threw in a cheap radeon HD 6450.
About two years later, a friend of mine called me. He had a CPU and GPU for sale for $50 a piece. So... Here comes build no. 2 for a total of $400.

    SPECS:
Core i3 3220, two cores two threads at 3.3 GHz.
Radeon HD 6450 Sapphire Vapor-X edition with 1 gig GDDR3
4 gigs DDR3 (Later upgraded to 8 gigs)
    Recycled HDD from previous PC
A DIYPC Solar-M1-R (Man this thing was sweet)
    Some cheap red EVGA LEDs

This was my baby. I could play Skyrim! GTA IV! The whole nine yards. I loved it so much. I could max out my minecraft settings! (This is prior to a lot of large updates that hindered performance) My life was complete. I was "Done" with my computer, or so I thought.

Later on, I went to build a computer for my uncle. I built him a system with a quad-core xeon 3123 v3 and a 750ti inside for some VERY light editing. OOPS! I ordered two video cards! I guess he just had to give me the second card as payment. New video card! So that brought my FPS counter up. Now I was having CPU problems! I could play Far Cry 4, because my CPU had 4 threads, but she sure did cry under the pressure.

Then... I saw a discount at MicroCenter. I could get $50 off a bundle of a CPU and motherboard! So I began plotting. I decided on a white build with RGB lighting, for maximum color flexibility. I bought the 4690k and a Z97 KRAIT board from MSI. I took it home and slapped a .4 GHz overclock onto my CPU with the stock cooler. Thought I was pretty baller! I could play games... for now.

With my mismatched parts; green ram, white board, red case and lights, and blue stock cooler, I decided it was time for the ultimate change. This was a year ago. I went to micro center again... this time with $700. I went HAM!
    I bought:
    NZXT H400 (white)
8 GB Hyperx Fury (Black, they didn't have white)
Corsair H100i GTX (the RGB version)
a GTX 960 G1 Gaming (Black video card with 4 gigs VRAM)
    Corsair 850m PSU

I took them home, and stayed up all night... and finished it. A year later, with a few more minor upgrades (boot SSD, RGB lights, 24-pin extension, etc.) My baby is done. Again. So... Here she is.
    SPECS:
    Corsair H440 (white)
    Core i5 4690k @ 4.8 GHz
    Corsair H100i GTX
Gigabyte Windforce GTX 960 G1 Gaming edition (4 GB)
    MSI z97 KRAIT edition
Toshiba OCZ 250 GB SSD (TLC NAND is a mistake. Buy SLC drives, don't cheap out.)
Two generic HDD's, one 500 GB and one 1TB
    Corsair 850 watt modular PSU

    I love it. <3
    White mist is its name.
Please give me any constructive criticism, comments on aesthetics, or comments on as to good/bad choices I made in the past or now. I'm excited to hear!

Its the orginal titan. No where near a 480. I'd say its a decent deal as long as you can get it working.

But there not similar in performance. BF1 for example can be around a 20 fps difference.  But hey do what you want. Just realise spending a bit more you;d have a brand new card with better performance all around.

oi, smarties. you know WHY its more expensive?
    @GSTARR@Orangeator@tlink@Notree

BECAUSE PC GETS THE ABILITY TO RUN HIGHER TICK RATE SERVERS. AKA MORE TICKS = MORE SYNCS = HIGHER REFRESH MONITORS ACTUALLY MATTER!!!! PC CAN ACTUALLY RUN UP TO 120Hz SERVERS. PS/XBOX CANNOT
PS/XBOX WILL BE LIMITED TO 30-45Hz SERVERS -> AS USUAL!!

Thats not even expensive. Its always been around $40 a month for BF servers. EA was smart. They've been letting company's run the rental servers losing out on huge profits.PC will use a lot more bandwidth so not surprising it cost more.

While you may be able to get it to work, it's is far from a good idea.  Drivers for chipsets and many other components are very involved.  Switching platforms is a big deal and you should follow that up with a clean install of Windows otherwise you are asking for a bunch of unpredictable problems.

Why upgrade if you are going to shortcut the job at the end?

Honest to god, 1.9v through Skylake would legitimately result in a smokeshow, if the board wasn't smart enough to nope.jpg the fuck outta that situation.

Notree reacted to Lays in Getting my i5-2500k to 5ghz 24/7
It has nothing to do with process size.  Skylake has high voltage tolerance because vcore and cache voltage are no longer separate.  Vcore powers the core and cache now, resulting in higher voltages.
    No.
Skylake can handle 1.9v when cooled properly, on air or water it will die most likely though.  Ln2 however it's fine to run 1.9-1.95v.

Much of the PGA vs LGA argument basically boils down to this: people can have momentary bouts of stupidity. That's one of the reasons much of how computer technology has developed is to make things as idiot-proof as possible. There is a limit, though.

I've been building systems since the 486-DX2. That was when the ZIF socket was young. Prior to the 486, you didn't have that. To get the processor out of the system, you had to use a "chip extractor" -- I think I still have mine somewhere that came with a toolkit my dad gave me all those years ago. You want to talk about the potential to bend pins... Without the ZIF, you had a much, much higher degree of probability since you had to set the processor correct before pressing it down. Press it down without making sure all the pins are lined up right and you'll bend them. The ZIF made that much easier -- set the processor, make sure it's seated properly, give it a small jiggle to double-check, then push down the retention arm.

So like many other aspects of building computers, the ZIF fell under the idea of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and "don't change the design unless someone has a legitimate complaint". The potential to bend pins is actually why Intel (and soon thereafter AMD) went to the cartridge processor -- the Pentium II and first Pentium IIIs -- before switching back to the ZIF with the exposed core because of heat. The dangers of that exposed core are why Intel and AMD started adding the IHS -- integrated heat spreader. The processor is more costly than the mainboard, as many learned through that telltale CRACK! that told you that you applied too much force in trying to attach your heatsink.

And now you're wanting to debate PGA vs LGA. I think a lot of people are only saying LGA is better simply because it's Intel's MO and not AMD's, and given the vast majority of this forum is comprised of people who would denounce anything AMD, it's no surprise. Neither is tangibly better. AMD has been able to produce high performing processors with the PGA, and Intel has been able to do the same with LGA.

The risk of bent pins is one that has long existed. The only thing LGA does is moves the risk from the CPU to the mainboard. And if the pins come to you from the manufacturer already bent, then that wasn't a problem with shipping, but with packing and handling. Only if there is clear damage to the product box could you say damaged in transit, but then why would you even take that home from the store? If it was shipped to you, then file the RMA. The same could happen with Intel mainboards: in the rare instance where there is poor handling during manufacture or packaging, you could have a mainboard with bent socket pins.

Otherwise there isn't any greater risk with PGA for one simple reason: YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TOUCH THE BOTTOM OF THE PROCESSOR! You're not supposed to touch any area that will be making electrical or signal contact -- whether that's the bottom of the processor, or the PCI-Express connections on a graphics card, or what have you. That's been true since the beginning. If you're mishandling the CPU, whether LGA or PGA, then you deserve any damage that happens. If you're not careful handling a small electronic component that set you back several hundred dollars, then you deserve any damage that occurs.

Yes, people can't be 100% careful, but then nothing can be 100% idiot-proof either. If you're going to say LGA is better simply because someone might be an idiot handling a PGA processor, you're not making much of an argument in your favor.
