There's no way to know for sure what got damaged, but if anything died it was most likely the SSD, since you say the arc came from it. If your friend has a PC of his own you could test the GPU with his PC, and for the CPU and RAM the most likely situation is that the motherboard took the damage in their stead. Though again, nothing can be said for certain until it is tested.

That's a screw (not included) being held on top of a bit in the shaft of the screwdriver.

Why did you screen record going to the website, clicking on the screwdriver, scrolling through the page, and then circling the image? You can take a screenshot by holding the power and volume down button, or you could just copy the image by hold pressing on the image and selecting copy image.

It could very well be dust buildup, or it could be an actual issue with the fan. Easiest option is to go about cleaning it and see what difference it makes.

Did you restart your computer yet? Don't panic, as this looks far more reminiscent of a driver issue than a hardware issue.

Is your motherboard's ethernet port a Gigabit port, and if so, do you have the drivers installed for it? The fact that it's hitting exactly 100Mbps leads me to believe it's an issue with the ethernet port, not the cable itself.

If it turns out your port isn't Gigabit or is damaged, you can always purchase a Gigabit PCIe card.

You're right, I missed the part about his initial speeds.

OP: Try taking both ends of your CAT cable and give it a gentle but firm yank at the connector. Make sure that all 8 wires are intact, as it's possible you messed up one of the internal wires when trimming the jacket. I highly doubt that the wire inside the walls are damaged, so you probably don't need to replace the cable, and maybe just the ends.

These are in Canadian dollars, meaning that not only is the dollar worth less, but parts often cost more than they would in the US. His $2000-$3000 budget is more like a $1500-$2200 budget in USD, and prices of parts are higher.

GalacticRuler reacted to CerealExperimentsLain in What made SSD burnup using Molex to SATA Adapter?
This is actually painfully incorrect advice based on a fun sounding rhyme.  'Molex To SATA Lose All Your Data'.

The problem with it, as you prove, is that the rhyme is dangerous because it promotes ignorance.  There's nothing with with MOLEX, it's a big, fat, hard to screw up connector.  The problem is the SATA connector.  As in, any SATA connector.  Cheap, badly crimped SATA connectors, since the connectors are small with little pins, are where the short happens.  It has nothing to do with 'Molex To SATA', it's 'Cheap Crappy SATA'.  Suggesting PCIE to SATA as an alternative has potentially the same problems because you think MOLEX is the problem instead of the SATA connector.  You are literally giving advice to possibly repeat the same mistake.  ...Also PCIE and CPU pins have 12v only, SATA requires 12 and 5v. (Basically nothing uses the 3.3v pins), unless your cable includes a buck to convert 12v to 5v as well, it won't power the drive.

But yeah, 'Oh MOLEX to SATA is the problem' is bad, ignorant advice.  With SATA being the problem, MOLEX to SATA, SATA to SATA extension, SATA power splitter, anything really, including potentially your modular power supply cables, are the problem if they've been badly/cheaply crimped.

You've just learned to blame the wrong thing because it's a lot more fun to say.

You've answered your own question. Molex to SATA is infamous for exploding or causing fires, since the vast majority of adapters aren't properly made.

It's hard to say right now. Given how unstable the GPU market is, we don't know if used GPU prices will ever return to their pre-COVID prices. The surge in demand for GPUs from both miners and home users is going to take years to saturate, and until then, prices probably will remain higher than they were prior.

GalacticRuler got a reaction from lackOS in Does Google search require CAPTCHAS to be solved with every VPN provider? Is there a VPN provider that can bypass CAPTCHAS?
DuckDuckGo does not have the same levels of traffic as Google, and Bing doesn't either for different reasons. Google isn't the only site that forces Captchas. If you try to log on any major website while on a VPN, it makes you do a Captcha, even on your first login attempt.

GalacticRuler got a reaction from lackOS in Does Google search require CAPTCHAS to be solved with every VPN provider? Is there a VPN provider that can bypass CAPTCHAS?
It's not the VPN that's the inherent issue, it's the fact that so many requests are coming from the same IP address. Schools and businesses get occasional Captchas too for this same reason. The way VPNs work is that they gives you a "fake" IP address, which is actually a real IP address located somewhere in the world. However, that "fake" IP address is given to numerous other users of the VPN, which makes it appear from Google's perspective that a ton of computers are sending requests from the same IP address.

If you are willing to wait, there's likely to be a lot of changes in the GPU market in that time. Ethereum ASIC cards are coming out, which will turn GPU mining irrelevant if they catch on, and even if they don't, EIP 1559 is coming out in 3 months or so which will halve the profits of Ethereum miners, both of which will result in less demand for new GPUs and bring a lot of GPUs into the used market.

GalacticRuler got a reaction from Letgomyleghoe in RX580 ram upgrade service
Because RAM chips on GPUs are soldered onto the PCB. Often times the lower RAM GPUs don't have the connectors needed to solder chips, and even if they did, the card would likely have various issues and in some cases the firmware might brick the card.

If you are a noob to PCs, then you most likely don't need an X570 board. A B550 board should be fine for you, since an X570 is only needed for overclockers or people who needs multiple PCIe 4.0 devices. Here's a bunch of ATX boards that would work for you:
