Help with my first build.

Szeth

Budget (including currency): 2000-2300 Canadian

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Borderlands, dark souls, halo, civ 6

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I bought a newer bundle containing a ryzen 5600x, ASUS dual fan 3060 oc edition, ASUS b450f gaming II motherboard, and ASUS 850w 850g psu. The build that I am thinking of going with is here: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/X7RRdD

I would appreciate any feedback, as I am a bit nervous about taking the plunge into building my own pc. Does everything look fairly balanced? Is there anything that I should spend less on? More on?

Thanks in advance!

As long as the motherboard, where you're buying it from, says "Ryzen 5000 ready", you're good to go.

Cool. I looked into flashing the bios and it didn’t seem hard for that board. Are there any parts you would change?

I would suggest looking at some reviews of the RTX 3060 vs the 2000 RTX series, it's slower than an RTX 2070 Super in most cases.  Just food for thought on what you can get for your money.

Not a great bundle, that's a poor mix of parts and I'm assuming you paid $$$$ for it. How much did you pay exactly? Using that for reference, we can tell you how good of deal/purchase that was. Spoilers: I can already tell you it's not good. 🙂

-For a $2000-$3000 build, a 5600X is not as acceptable as you'd think. For this pricerange we'd typically recommend a 5800X.

-Not a great motherboard, but it'll get the job done. A B550 board would've been nice.

-CL18 memory is a poor choice on Ryzen, it performs best on lower latency (CL16 or better) kits. Corsair is overpriced, get a Crucial Ballistix 3600Mhz CL16 kit for cheaper.

-Again, Corsair is overpriced. Get a 1TB SN550 drive from Western Digital.

-You should resell the 3060 and make some money. It doesn't suit your budget, typically we'd recommend a 3060 for nothing more than a $1000-$1200 build.

-That's a terrible case, and has a solid front panel. Don't buy anything that isn't mesh in 2021.

-That power supply is overkill, and yet rather poor at the same time. An MSI A650GF would've been better suited.

-Poor choice of fans, Corsair fanboyism is horrid amongst new builders. Either get a case with some decent pre-installed fans (like the P360A, P400A, etc.) or get some Noctua's.

-Not a good monitor either. The AOC 24G2 is the top recommendation for 1080p 144hz.

-There aren't really any good prebuilt keyboards available for purchase (especially in this price bracket), but a Ducky One/2 Mini would be better.

-I could complain about the choice of mouse as well, but that's more of a preference kind-of thing. Preference in shape is also a thing.

Thanks for the feedback. All prices are in Canadian dollars and we pay more for pc parts in general than in the states. Bundle was 1300 Canadian. Will definitely look into changing the ram, ssd, monitor and case. Someone on Reddit had many of the same suggestions, and I feel like I have fallen into some first time builder mistakes. I can try to resell my board and psu potentially, but the 3060 was 550 Canadian and as cheap as I can expect to get.

These are in Canadian dollars, meaning that not only is the dollar worth less, but parts often cost more than they would in the US. His $2000-$3000 budget is more like a $1500-$2200 budget in USD, and prices of parts are higher.

Unfortunately very true. Is there anything that you would recommend changing about the build?

That power supply appears very overpriced. You don't need 850W, and certainly not the ROG Strix branding. Something in the 600-700W range would be plenty, and would likely shave off a solid $100.

Thanks for the build idea! This would either mean that I would return the bundle that I got from newegg, or try to resell the components which is possible. It would also be slightly more expensive than my current setup as I would need to add mouse, keyboard and monitor still, but I think the gpu that you have is significantly better.

Yes, unfortunately it was part of the bundle that I purchased, which I am coming to regret a bit, although it was the only way to get my hands on an affordable 3060. I might try to resell it and find something cheaper.

I'm Canadian as well, I'm not sure what you two are talking about! 🇨🇦

My feedback is still valid, unsure of what either of you were thinking. My recommendations are actually valid in both currencies so you're both wrong in this instance (along with anyone who agreed).

I definitely appreciate the feedback! How does this updated list look? https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/Dqy9Mv? I changed the parts that a lot of people here and on reddit thought looked wrong. The monitor isn't available at parts picker so here is that link: https://www.newegg.ca/p/N82E16824012041?Item=N82E16824012041. Also, my budget of around 2k includes taxes and peripherals, but if you think I'm still overspending on things other then the psu, I am very interested to hear how I can improve my build, as I am very new to this. I can return my bundle and start over, what do you think of this guys suggested list? https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/sXZHHz

+Good motherboard

+Good choice of storage

-No CPU Cooler

-Bad memory

-TERRIBLE GPU recommendation. That card is only worth $600 CAD, that's inflated pricing.

-Good case, but no exhaust fans were added to the list. You'd see thermal issues with this build, this case only comes with 3 intake fans and no exhaust.

-Not a great PSU, it's hard to recommend anything other than an MSI A-GF series PSU at the moment. They're a really good value as far as multi-rail units go.

That being said, here's what I'd recommend for your budget:

Thanks again for the feedback! The 3070 is going to be very hard to find I think, but I might look into reselling my psu and motherboard to replace them with something like what you have. How bad is the case on my second list? I thought the airflow would be ok without extra fans if I use the mesh front with the exhaust fan that it has. I was hoping to spend a bit less on a monitor, but if it is really worth it I could spend a bit more. How is this one in comparison: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08PHKNNRY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_BCWPVRZR9X2A2FRGEH5J?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Thanks for all your help so far!

They're pretty easy to find as long as you're patient. Enable stock update on a website such as nowinstock.net to be notified when new stock arrives, and then save your CC credentials to your browser for a quicker checkout. The stock issues with current-gen GPUs are slowly getting better finally, so I would expect this issue to be partially resolved in the near future. 🙂

The Cooler Master H500 case is not bad for thermals out-of-the-box and comes with a decent configuration for fans pre-installed. This however, is shorted by its pricetag and uncommon use of larger 200mm front intake fans. In itself this removes the ability for the chassis to properly cool any front-mounted radiators, and leaves you with few options in terms of replacement fans. Typically the larger fan size can amount to better noise-level performance as the fans don't have to spin as fast to move as much air as a smaller fan. In this case however, the whole system practically levels out at ~40dBa under load (with and without the mesh panel) which is rather loud by comparison, and defeats the whole purpose. The P360A/P400A chassis are capable of similar performance at a lower cost, and use more standard fan sizes at 120mm.

Not a bad monitor, but the AOC 24G2 is faster in every regard and HDR is just a gimmick until your display is capable of at least 600 nits peak brightness. The 24GN600-B is only rated at 300 nits.

Ok, so for what I want to do, I would rather save money and use a 3060, as I’m only planning to play at 1080, and still need to spend on a mouse, keyboard and monitor. You’re convinced me on the monitor, I will go with the aoc.  I will also look into other case options, but am willing to spend a little bit more on what I like aesthetically. Is this a good cpu cooler: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07H22TC1N/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_56WV7GYDVYTCZDNTKG54?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Also how does the Samsung 940 ssd compare to the wd sn550? I think the black would look better than the blue on a black motherboard. Maybe I’m being dumb and you can’t see it anyway I don’t know.

Depends, I just did a very similar build to this yesterday, my B450 f gaming II luckily came "Ryzen 5000 desktop ready", depends on which gen board you get (random if you are buying online) if you are going to the place to buy it, then look for one with a sticker that says "Ryzen 5000 desktop ready", even if the board you buy doesnt have one its not the end of the world, that motherboard has a BIOS flashback button, meaning you can download the latest bios, and just plug it into the MB and update it, then it will support your CPU (check on how to do it online),
I would personally opt for a less expensive PSU (850W for that system is a bit much) but if you are planning on upgrading in the future to some very power hungry GPUs then it can be useful. Also I would go for CL16 ram, as CL14 is too expensive and the latest Ryzen CPUs love fast memory, 16gb 3200mhz is still perfect, maybe go for Corsair Vengeance (it also has RGB if you like it) about 100 USD, CL16 and pairs nicely with the MB and CPU option, buying 3600 mhz doesnt make much sense since 5600x only supports up to 3200mhz) .
Only other comment I can offer is on PC case, there isnt much difference in performance nowadays, but if you are interested more in space and performance rather than RGB, then maybe check out stuff like Fractal, Corsair 4000d (both the airflow and normal versions), 275 carbide maybe, and tons of others.

Edit: Just read other comments, saw someone recommend Sn550 NVMe, its exactly the one im using right now and works perfectly, price/performance is great.

In terms of aesthetic in mesh cases, it's hard to beat the Meshify 2 line of cases imo. Very minimalist, good performance, solid build. If you're into RGB however, I'd keep looking.

It's not a bad cooler per-se, but it costs the same as the be quiet! Pure Rock 2, which is the better cooler. Better fan, slightly larger heatsink, and better warranty.

be quiet!: 3 year warranty

Cooler Master: 2 year warranty

940 doesn't exist so I assume you mean 960, 970, or 980? All of which perform similar to the SN550, but the Western Digital is rated to last longer.

Typically 1.5M hours MTBF on Samsung, and 1.7M hours MTBF on Western Digital. Plus the SN550 is cheaper anyways.

If you meant the 840, that SSD is completely different and uses the SATA III interface rather than M.2 and is neither capable of the same sustained read/write speeds nor access speeds. It is not an NVME SSD.

It'll be under your motherboards included M.2 heatsink, you won't even see it.

I have the same motherboard, if you install the NVMe on the M.2_2 (the one with the heatsink) PCIex16_1 runs at x8, alternatively if you install it on M.2_1 (space between GPU and CPU but no heatsink) if will disable SATA ports 5/6 which no one cares about. But not using it just because the blue looks bad is not very smart, I have a very similar build (same MB and Sn550) and the "tint" on the tempered glass of the case is so black its impossible to even see, so I wouldnt worry.

What does it mean that it runs at x8 sorry?
