Embattled reacted to Needfuldoer in Western Digital Splitting their HDD and Flash Divisions into two Separate Companies
Sure, why not! Splitting the company worked out so well for Motorola, after all.

Speculation: Maybe Kioxia only wants the flash storage division, and they couldn't reach a deal to merge with WD in its current form. If they merged with all of WD and chose to divest the magnetic storage division afterward, all that capital would be tied up while they struggle to find a buyer and complete the sale.

They couldn't sell to Seagate, because that would effectively create a monopoly (thus drawing attention from regulators, like Nvidia-ARM). Toshiba may not be able to afford to buy it, and even if they could that would still leave the mechanical hard drive market with a duopoly.

If Western Digital splits on its own, "WD-HDD" will continue to exist in its current form and Kioxia can acquire "WD-SSD" free and clear.

I have 3 thoughts, with varying levels of agreeing/disagreeing with Apple

    1) Competing app stores should be allowed for sure. Completely agree this is a monopoly that should be broken/competition allowed. I think it's fair to include some warning text when installing an alternate app store that you won't be as secure (as you won't), but getting apps from alternate sources should 100% be allowed. Basically, the setup on the Mac today is pretty ideal IMO. An app store exists, but nothing about it is required to be used. That said, I don't think this will be a universal win for customers. E.g. how long until Facebook pulls their app from Apple's app store and forces you to used a 3rd party app store, so they can install a version of Facebook on your phone that'll tank your battery and share everything you do with Facebook? Lots of 80+ year olds using Facebook that'll just blindly follow their instructions on how to install apps from a 3rd party app store so they can see pictures of their grand kids, with no idea of the ramifications of their actions.

    2) iMessage doesn't have significant usage share in Europe, so don't think there's any argument that that's a monopoly that needs to be broken. Forcing intercommunication between various messaging apps feels like it'll be the end of legit encryption. This isn't just an iMessage issue-- Signal, etc, too. So, against regulation there-- especially as the EU is constantly trying to force back doors into encrypted messages.

    3) Forcing different browser engines could easily/likely end up in a Chrome/Chromium monopoly, which is NOT a good thing. Right now, only Safari legitimately stands between the only web browsing engine being controlled by the world's largest advertising company, that also likes to harvest user data. The moment using webkit isn't required, Google can force anyone that wants to use their apps (has to be 90%+ of the world population) to get a Chromium powered browser. This would be, IMO, a very bad thing. Instead of a web being built on standards, we'd rapidly progress to a web based on google's desires. This already happens to some extent, but it can only go so far when any functionality based on that can only reach Chromium based customers.

Excellent advice! Before Apple loses 1 or 2 % profit margin, they rather pull out of Europe and just leave their 95 billion USD revenue for their competitors. That will show them!

"Apple will stop selling in Europe" is the most toothless threat of all times.

This is more broadly against opening up their closed ecosystem to the competition and losing billions because they can't milk their customers as they did before.

Intel ODM servers used to be very wide spread. Over time that market drifted more and more over to Supermicro, Quanta, Inspur etc. I still have an Intel server sold as an Intel server (LGA1366 gen). They were a nice way of getting a good design with reliably well implemented firmware for cheap on the used market that didn't come with any proprietary things that HPE/Dell/IMB/Lenovo did.

The review is of a consumer desktop CPU and was compared to consumer desktop CPUs. The comments and conclusions are within that context. Sure of course it's a great CPU but that point was that for some of the tested applications/workloads there are better choices for not much more cost, on platforms that go up to 64 cores that have quad channel memory and better.

Everything is relative, the 7950X3D is great but also crap compared to a Threadripper and the latest Xeon-W's etc. A higher performing platform is neither free nor the same cost, so it's up to the buyer to decide on if something is worthwhile.

Embattled reacted to RONOTHAN## in Need some help with ram. Ryzen 9 7950X3D
AM5 does not really work in quad rank configurations, so unless absolutely necessary you want to avoid 128GB of RAM at all costs. If you actually need more than 64GB of RAM, I'd be waiting about a month for the 48GB DIMMs to come to the US and run just 96GB of RAM instead.

RAM manufacturer doesn't really matter all that much, so I wouldn't really look too deep into who makes it, it'll all come from either Samsung, SK Hynix, or Micron anyway.

This entire page seems to be bantering about Date formatting that just seems irrelevant to the topic lol. Its how this stuff has been done if its launched in the US, You get the US Format. If its launched in the EU or Asia that use that format, they use that. Why is this surprising?

699 for 7950x3D pretty surprising, thought it would be 800$ minimum. Nailed the 7800x3d price and 7900x one tho.

Yeah, MultiQuote worked, Copy and Paste doesn't. I added your quote to the post. Giving credit where credit is due.

Regardless, the launch date of the 7800X3D is definitely interesting. Your theory makes sense, as I can't see many other reasons to delay it that long.

It could also be that people who were waiting for the 7000X3D chips will have to go for a 7900X3D or 7950X3D if they want to immediately gain access to the technology. Meaning, they will be paying much more money compared to a 7800X3D, meaning more profit for AMD. They might be trying to move more units of their flagship processors, and delaying the 7800X3D allows them to do that.

The price difference between the 7900X3D and 7950X3D doesn't really make too much sense. If you plan on getting a 7900X3D only $100 more gets you the 7950X3D, so that's an interesting pricing decision. This is probably why they are launching first, maybe people who were planning on getting the 7800X3D might go with the 7900X3D by stretching their budget and not wanting to wait until April.

I think hybrid chiplet architectures are going to be the way forward, so these issues need to start getting sorted out eventually. Intel is clearly all-in on P and E cores. I don't see why AMD couldn't go in a similar direction with even more variation - V-Cache die, regular "P" core die, their efficient C core dies, and maybe even with these dies across process nodes.

Yes, the software will be a headache, but we're starting to reach the limits of how smart we can make the rocks we put lightning inside of. We need to start being smarter about how we use them.

Embattled reacted to Shimejii in AMD’s Ryzen 9 7900X3D and 7950X3D Won’t be Faster than the 7800X3D in Most Games
Yeah this makes sense, if you listened VERY carefully to what they said, the Chiplet with the 3D Vcache will be limited to 5 Ghz, and the other chiplet will have the normal 7950x Die that can boost to 5.7ghz. So its gonna be an actual pain in the ass for the Scheduler to properly chose which one to use and not use for probably a few months.

After all the bugs are ironed out, it should be a great  cpu for both gaming AND productivity, but you may question what would be the point, If you want a gaming chip use the 7800x3D, if you want a production chip get a 7950x, doing a hybrid may not make sense. Should be fun and interesting to test though at least and see some of the results

Nah fr, I am a huge advocate for changing the codebase of products. Applications should be rewritten often. Doing so allows your dev teams to be more familiar with the code, lets your product adopt new technologies, and improves security. Software should not exist unchanged for 20 years simply because it works.

I agree, all seniors at Microsoft seriously need to have heartfelt meeting over what Windows should look like and then bloody stick to it.

It seems like they're changing it for the sake of changing something and completely forgetting the fact that there are some stupid issues on Windows like having two different settings screens or having some parts of Windows look like from XP days while others look something in between of current design and Windows vista.

I haven't read into the adobe suite terms of service lately, I have been using old school buy once software so it's not really a problem for those users, but my gut feeling is that this could open adobe up to legal action if a creator lost working files or their back catalog being turned to black.
Whether it's previously created content being stored in the cloud which is skirting the line of "accessible" vs "useable" or current contracts for production work needing those files, there are plenty of companies using that colour palette which have effectively been given the finger and could cost major$ in losses if the files show up as a void of colour.
We always assume people who use the software will know all the industry changes but if I'm an artist reopening old files and they appear corrupt, I probably wouldn't think it's some paid software subscription. If I wasn't very tech literate, I'd be thinking I just lost my whole back catalogue of work.

I'm honestly hoping a class action suit against both companies costs them millions simply to discourage future companies from pulling the same scam. Finished files or in progress files are the IP of the creator and shouldn't be effected by arbitrary changes in deals between companies. I consider it the same as if the LOTR trilogy suddenly didn't have vfx because the company closed it's shop.
