Did I go overkill on the PSU

Freeeeezy

When I bought the rest of my parts for my build (Which get here tomorrow and I'm super excited!) I bought a 650w fully modular 80+ Gold PSU because it was a great deal on Newegg. But after calculating the power consumption of my system, the recommend wattage I got was literally less than half of what my PSU is capable of.

I realize that's its nice to have that extra head room to upgrade (Which I most definitely will do), I still have the feeling that I went a bit overkill on the PSU. What do you think?

BTW this is not gonna make me send back my PSU to get a cheaper one because I've waited too long for this build this was the cheapest fully modular PSU at the time and still is, compared to the price of all the other fully modular power supplies. I just want to hear some opinions.

Not overkill at all, its smart to get a good power supply that you can upgrade with later

Not a problem to get more power than you currently need. It becomes a problem when you buy one with less power than you need. ;P

GTX 950.

Did you get the EVGA NEX 650 G1? If so, I'd recommend returning it and getting the GS or G2 instead. The G1 isn't the best PSU.

Yes, that is a bit overkill. But all it means is your power supply will be a few percent less efficient. Nothing to worry about.

You can never be too overkill with a power supply. It is always better to have more power than you need than less power. Plus, if you got a good deal, why are you worried? 650w is enough to power pretty much any single gpu and if you got the GS, it is one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest, tier one psu out there.

Yep, that was the EVGA G1 he was talking about. It's a mediocre value proposition buy it'll do for now. If it's on the return window then I would refund it and get the much better GS or G2 series. Also, a GTX 950 is a very lightweight card so expect like 200W system usage under load.

Jonny Guru said it's fine. He just deducted points because it barely passed 80+ Gold efficiency, which I'm fine with. I originally was going to go with a bronze Seasonic power supply but I chose this one because it was just $60 with the mail and rebate. I'd have to spend around $20 more to get a G2 which, tbh, I don't feel that I need to spend.

Overall it just doesn't seem worth sending back this PSU as I have been waiting sooooo long for my first build.

I'm not even going to read because you can never go overkill on a psu imo.

Even if it's a 1500w in a htpc.

Overkill is possible. Think about it like a muscle. Yeah, you can lift 5lbs no problem, but if you're not working it within a certain range (For a PSU that's around 50%-80% on load) then your muscle (whatever muscle that may be) will start to degrade very slowly because it is not being used to anywhere near it's full potential.

fair point but anything will degrade overtime.

It's fine, I don't know how much power your Xeon will draw under full load, but your system will most likely use less than 450W under full load both CPU and GPU.
