How long would an intel core i5 last until Intel qualifies it obsolete

Go to solution Solved by minibois,

well a 2500K is still very viable right now, which is 4 years old now.

It still doesn't bottleneck a GTX 970. Take that as you want

I saw that plenty of sandy bridge cpu's are obsolete on intel's website and I want a future proof cpu. is haswell new enough to last at least 4 years. is devil's canyons. or should I just wait for intel skylake to come out. how long do cpu's typically last for intel i5

You can never really "future proof" a PC, just get whatever is out at the moment, unless you can wait. The difference between CPU generations are very minimal.

It depends on what you're gonna be using it for. But generally, yea, should last for 5 years or so

Thanks for replying so fast, I can't find any broadwell cpu's even though they have been out and about for almost a year. What is the newest cpu that is an i5 that I can buy below 300 USD.

Sandy Bridge is still good for most computing stuff there hasn't been much that has changed in recent years. So it could last you 4-5 years but we don't know how technology could change in the future for sure... i'll say it'll be fine. could go for skylake with ddr3/ddr4 if you really want to be sure.

it may say obsolete but I'm running a sandy bridge i7 and there's little difference practically vs a devils canyon to warrant an upgrade, it's into its 5th year and theres no reason to upgrade

we'll see how AMD Zen pushes the industry

There is no such thing as a future proof cpu, there is only a cpu that might still be relevant at a future date.

I will say the enthuiast platform generally lasts longer than the consumer, but you're paying a premium for it, and no there aren't any i5's on the enthusiast platform.

If you want to ask how long a chip lasts I'd say ask @ he's got a habit of using, repairing, modifyinf, and juryrigging chips I would consider way past their best days.

If you focus is gaming, take a look at steam for required specs on a game you want to play, figure out how old the cpu mentioned is, and multiply by 80%.

+1

I'm coming up to 6 years on x58 and reckon I can squeeze another 1-2 years out now that I've dropped a 6 core xeon in.

Plenty other things to upgrade on a system before ditching the platform, SSD, GPU etc.

Incidentally these will carry over to a new system later should you need them to, so it's not wasted money.

Sandy Bridge is nowhere near obsolete. They are overclocking beasts and per clock dont perform a lot worse than haswell.
