In Today's World Is Optical Drive Necessary?

NeelanCruzz

I use mine to play old games like The Simpsons Hit & Run and watch DVDs, but that's about it

I think that if you have Unlimited Data on your internet then no an optical drive is not needed.

I am only using one in my MacPro at the moment for archiving all my DVDs onto a NAS and I am torrenting all my blu-rays (Its legal to own a backup of a movie that you own). Plus I'm keeping all of the DVDs just in storage instead of taking up room in my already full to the brim bedroom.

Anyway I own an S340 and its a fantastic little case but the side panel can get scratched easily.

It depends. For most people, it's fine. If you're in somewhere where the internet's not too amazing, or if you have a number of older games, you may have a use.

For me, yes. I refuse to buy digital music and films, as they hold a little more value when they're physical.

When you have a 100GB data cap, yeah you kinda need one,

Do we live in a world where data caps is still a thing? yes we do,

do we then live in a world where we still need to cling to optical

disc drives? yes we do.

Not to mention that boxed game copies with some nice artwork

is vastly superior and holds a greater sentimental value compared

to digital copies.

I don't know, but I think optical drive is still needed although rarely used.... Better safe than sorry.... Don't know when to use it.

You're not my mother, you can't tell me what I do & do not need! :P

In all seriousness, I use my ODD whenever I buy music CD's but, that's all it gets used for now. I can't even recall the last time I burnt a CD or DVD for that matter. So yeah.

I don't even bother buying physical versions of PC games anymore, unless; A: it's cheaper than Steam & B: it has Steamworks. It's usually not the case though, so I just stick to digital. I think WoW was the last PC game I bought as a physical copy and that was the Cataclysm expansion since, it was just easier for me to go digital last 2 expansions.

Saying that I love having physical media for TV shows, movies, music & console games. Dunno why just something I prefer I guess.

The only thing I have "physical" copies of now are Blu Rays (ive always liked having a physical collection of movies) and console games.

I don't see how.

Have you see Google Internet? 300mb/s if you don't have a cap on that and you download an ungodly amount of shiz then a cap would help you from not running over that and paying out of pocket which I assume they would charge a f*&k ton for honey trapping is business and any business is good buisiness, suck you in with "unlimited" internet then you run over it because I know people who could eat 100Gb cap like it's nothing.

I still have an optical drive in my laptop 1yo and I actually need it for work.  As a teacher there are some documentaries that can not be downloaded and are only found on disk form.  Ditto for some of the programs we still have to use.  Also lets just say the internet where I am is bad, really bad most of the time.  So while they are going the way of the dodo optical drives are not extinct just yet.

Me- I feel like a secret agent man, as my wallet now has five different currencies in it

Me- It has come to my attention that it is impossible to buy liver in Mongolia because it is bad, but it is perfectly ok to buy salted sheep heads

Haven't had one in my main rig since 2011.

It's only necessary for HTPCs/ Steamboxes.

I thought the whole point of Steamboxes was that they had Steam, which meant that content was delivered digitally. :P

I still always have to use mine. I would love it over anything else. Physical over digital.

Well I'm not interested in having more than 1 box next to my TV. So that one box needs to have everything. That includes a blu-ray drive, and a lot of hard drives for other media.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

You don't need it. If you ever need one in the future just buy an external one, almost the same price as an internal one.
