Phenom II is still great.

Phenom II's are cheap as chips on the bay, and have better single core performance than FX...

I would choose these over any FX out there for the money.

I have tested Far Cry 4 paired with my quad core B55 at 4.2ghz, and AMD XFX Radeon 7770 1GB OC'd 1200 core/ 1400 memory, it get's 30-40 FPS on high at 1080p with SMAA and no AO/Fur/Volumetric effects/ tree effects.

Textures left on high due to Vram budget of 1GB.

The CPU was at 30-60% usage throughout.

Pair it with a 280x and you could easily max this with the Phenom sans AA.

Isn't the IPC of those Phenoms better than the FX series? So if you overclock one of those 980BE's you can easily beat any FX CPU in games that don't scale well above 4 threads. Which is...just about every game.

I got 4 min 51 max 36 average on ultra 1080p with Far Cry 4 (960T, R9 270), it was bottlenecking like crazy and dropping frames but it wasn't a horrible experience. That was at stock speed though, I'm sure if I overclocked it that it would perform much better, but I don't feel like redoing the benchmarks right now.

well in multithreaded it scales better because fx modules are only 80% efficient with both integer units active, but true quad fx vs phenom is much closer

980be's are rare. I'd recommend 960Ts to most as a lot of them unlocked to the hex core thubans.

I'd have to agree with this, I used to have a pavillion dv6 with the 1.66GHz mobile version, and it was brilliant in any game (played minecraft better than my current core 2 with its OC), even with the mobile graphics (HD5xxx 1GB vRAM)

So much progress since 2009.

Ikr? Its why I'm going back to wolfdale and harpertown cpus for intel (dont have AMD after I sold my laptop-kicking myself over it), my core 2 gets just over 50%of the performance of my i5 4440, and an xeon should in theory be able to match or surpass.

Edit: just found this btw

I'm not quite sure I follow.

Compare this progress;

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/362?vs=700

To this progress;

http://anandtech.com/bench/product/837?vs=48

Tried to match clockfrequencies.

Intel nearly doubled the per-core speed since nehalem. AMD hasn't improved much since Deneb, in fact they went backwards... My snarky remark was aimed at AMD..

I know, but Intel and AMD are as bad as eachother (and I do OC where possible), its quite easy to make an older CPU beat the hell out of newer ones is my point.

Well Phenom II cannot touch a stock clocked Sandy i5 2500k even at 4.2ghz.

Still don't follow. You really can't make a core2duo or core2quad perform the same as an i5. If that is what you're trying to say, i'm sorry you have a bad case of confirmation bias. It's not the same story for AMD, which is what the TS is trying to say. Those old Phenoms still beat the FX series in games, just because they have better IPC and in most games 4cores is all you need. Which is pretty pathetic seeing as those chips are from 2009-ish.

Which is why you compare within each company to judge the amount of improvements made.

Newer doesn't mean the latest. I just run the burn test and when you see a dual core get over half the performance (in Gflops) of an i5 you know your on the right track.

My Sempron 145 was a beast for what it was. Sure, not a Phenom, but damn. Even when I just had the other core unlocked and the CPU OCd to 3.2GHz, it was roughly as fast as the A6-3650 in my grandma's computer.

So much progress since 2009.

Last time AMD made an IPC advancement was 2007 with the Agena K10 release.

Phenom II just added L3, more cores, DDR3 IMC and better clock speeds.

Here i have downclocked it to 4.0ghz to show a normal max OC on a C3 Deneb as my chip is pretty golden, and used a game that is heavily CPU bound.

Even when heavily CPU limited it is largely above 120FPS, and never drops below.

Counter Strike is such a nice CPU test, wonder why it never gets used... I get perfect scaling to 4 cores.

How does that game scale beyond 4 cores?

Not really tested, but an i5 will get the same FPS as an i7 so...

All my mates have the Phenom II X4 965 or 970. Pretty much does what they need for gaming. An intel CPU is never worth, in my opinion, purely for gaming. They are damn expensive, and a couple frames isn't worth double the cost. AMD makes cheap sh*t CPUs and I love it  :lol:

I use a Lenovo T440: i5 4300U, 8GB RAM, 128GB Samsung 840 Evo, 14" 900p display and an external 23" 1080p passive 3D monitor. Extended 6-cell battery with internal 3-cell. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (I only use open-source software -- haven't paid for a single program yet).
