For once and for all, Is furmark dangerous?

Ok so i saw a lot of people on a forum or facebook group who got their GPU killed after running furmark.

I knew that furmark really pushes our GPU beyond their limit by putting unnecessary ridiculously demanding workloads.

 

For some reason, Most people who sell USED GPU or 2ND Like New GPU test their Graphics Card with furmark in order to confirm its condition IN HERE. (I know its ridiculous for me at least)

If its pass then the graphics card is in a good condition but if its fail or just getting too hot they will not sell it, They didn't even bother to change the paste.

 

So if furmark is a dangerous software why does it exist and why people use it?

Just like putting your car on a dyno, there's an inherit risk of reaching the maximum capabilities of electronics.

 

However, it is a good metric that the item works, and allows you to easily compare models.

dude i don't need furmark to confirm that the item work and i am sure i dont need that to compare models..just look at the benchmark or run something like unigine heaven

I used to think it wasn't dangerous until I loaded it up on my 980ti one day and it killed the GPU core. Could also be because I was BIOS modding it and dumping a lot of volts into it

There is an element of risk that lies outside the software. In short, if you have sensible settings and adequate cooling, it is no problem whatsoever. If you're turning up the volts and overclocking it to an inch of its life, that's a different story.

 

It shouldn't be an instant fail anyway. You can see temps creep up, and if you get uncomfortable with where its going, you can stop it. The nearest I've ever seen to a card going south from FurMark was an XFX made 280X. The factory overclock was a bit much and you can see it entering thermal runaway. That's when, as the card gets hotter, it also uses more power, that makes it get hotter... and it wont end well. Thankfully the built in thermal and power limits capped it before it melted down, but it was really on the edge. I bios mod restored it to stock voltage and clocks, and now it runs as cool as a ever.

i heard that before but i also read post on a forum (can't remember where probably overclocker) where there are a certain Graphics card model especially a lower tier AIB card that just have an awful cooling solution for the Vrms..hence could kill it if it get pushes too far and by that mean by running furmark.

I've never heard of furmark killing graphics cards at stock voltages before, so I guess you should know the card's limits before putting it at full load. It's almost always user error imo.

EVGA tech support said Furmark is dangerous.  Only real feedback I've gotten from a manufacturer.  Take it how you want.

i use it, but i also only run it when im sure i have card that wont break. I wouldnt run furmark on my dusty and old GTX 275 because i dont know the condition of the power components, and how hot it would get but i dont mind running it on my GTX 1080 thats watercooled and running 2100MHz core as i know that card has good power components, caps that have been kept cool and chokes that shouldnt fail from just a hevy load. I would however not run furmark on loop for ages and would keep to running the benchmark.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Okay so basically if the components on the PCB is still in a good condition, its okay to run furmark.

The only problem is we don't know, we only assume that our gpu is still good cause we don't know if something goes to shit all of a sudden right. cause shit always happen.

Yah, I wouldn't run it if I wasn't sure pretty much. I know nothing on my card gets more than lukewarm, which should mean my capacitors haven't been tortured by much heat and therefor should still be in good condition and chokes haven't been a problem as far as I know besides the 700 series from NVIDIA so those should also be good.

 

If you want to use it you should use it on stuff you know is good to test the limits. If you are unsure about if it's in good condition, then don't use it
