Spectre Variant 4 possibly causing hindered SSD performance.

.Apex.

here is the link to my previous post:

i have found out that Windows 10 is causing all my drives to have a huge hit on Write speed.

i installed Ubuntu to test my drives and they performed perfectly, and my latency was perfect too.

so why is no one talking about this? why am i the only one having this issue? i mentioned my OS build in my previous post.

could this be the new Spectre Variant 4?

Spectre 4 Patches for Windows 10:

1803 Build 17134.112

1709 Build 16299.492

1703 Build 15063.1155

Because it's a known issue and there's not much that can be done about it without either buying a new CPU without those vulnerabilities or disabling the workarounds.

everything was fine before Variant 4 (patch released last month), but dropping to 330 mb/s Write with 16000ms latency is just too much... thats insane.

it should hit the news if everybody is experiencing this, but no one seems to be talking about it.

Not a spectere issues, this is normal. Make the queue depth longer, so the speeds are higher. Turn sync on and this won't be a problem, but speeds are lower.

What benchmark?

it is not normal.. im using CrystalDiskMark Sequential Q32T1, before the update i got 560 read 530 write, like the ubuntu benchmark is showing.

what do you get after the update?

Is this your boot drive?

Is this a clean install?

it is my boot drive, and it has been my boot drive before the update.

now i get 560 Read and 330 Write and the latency is 16000ms during the write test... but during the read test its 1-3ms (according to task manager)

The ubuntu latency test isn't during the writes, its a latency test only, so you can't compare those number.

That latency number seems about right for that queue depth.

IS trim on?

What drive?

never mind the latency for the ubuntu benchmark.... but 16000ms is insane, and all my drives have the same latency during the write benchmark... and again, i tested my drive thoroughly when i first got it, that was before the Spectre patch, and i had 560/530 in DiskMark.

for that queue depth, seems right.

Your never running at q32 in any real life uses anyways, so that number doesn't matter at all.

Look into a better benchmark like iometer.

16000ms for an SSD seems right to you? seriously?

even if the latency "seems right" what about the transfer speed?

try a different benchmark.

Thats total latency, thats due to the large queue depth. You sacfafice latency for speed. You never see that latency in real life.

AS SSD Benchmark has the same write speed for Sequential (around 300mb) but the access time is good, why is my write speed so bad in windows 10? i used to get 500+ for both write and read in AS SSD.

Have you tried this drive on a different system? No idea here.

no, but as you can see i tried it in Ubuntu and it works just fine
