Mac Pro... is actually upgradable

I mean in terms of CPU & GPU. GPU we knew about it all along, but it turns out you can swap out the CPU to upgrade (or if you wanna save like $500-$800 bucks of apple tax when you buy a BTO one with upgraded CPU in apple's website).

Not that it's gonna matter, but most of the concerns people had about upgrading CPU/GPU.. well, there you have it.

I quote from one of the comments:

I think the real story here is that OWC beat ifixit with the first Mac Pro tear down.

In all 4 of the available CPU options (4-core, 6-core, 8-core, 12-core), they use the standard LGA2011 socket.

Very interesting.  This goes against much of the nes/speculation/rumors that I had previously heard.  Not that I'm complaining, but why the sudden change?

Well of course the CPU, RAM can be upgraded. Did anyone really think they couldn't?

*In tv announcer voice* Now you can upgrade your already expensive piece of crap to an even more expensive piece of crap.

Life is pain. Anyone who says any different is either selling something or the government.

This will still suffer from upgradability problems.  There aren't enough ram slots and they will probably be way behind realeasing a new version that supports new sockets and ddr4.  Even though the GPU's are upgradeable they still will need to be purchased from apple and if the last mac pro is any indication the gpu offerings from apple will likely be very slim.  Last I checked the best gpu offered with the old mac pros was a 5870.

Considering the form factor it seemed extremely unlikely.

When everyone said it wasn't upgradeable I was thinking purely hard drive space, ODD, expansion card (proprietary controller sort of thing).  I always assumed seeing as it was an Intel CPU and ECC that it was not going to be proprietary. To be honest I am kinda floored people thought that.

well, it's *A*P*P*L*E* and yes honestly people are dumb for thinking that but I was thinking they wouldn't allow you to replace CPU...

If your thinking along the lines of warranty then fair enough, but ultimately it's just a handful of screws away isn't it?  Just like every other prebuilt system.

it doesn't have to be proprietary. Intel already does a lock of BGA sockets, CPU could very easily have been soldered to the board.

I was sure I read in the specs that the CPU was an upgradeable part, e.g when ordering you can pay extra and get the 6 core instead of the quad, which insinuates that it would be a standard 2011, or else they would have to manufacture different boards for every possible individual customer order.

so u were surprised you could upgrade storage but not surprised you could upgrade the cpu. And as for intel cpu upgradability, what about laptops.

Huh?  I was not surprised about either.  and what about laptops?  we are talking about the mac pro not laptops.

I always thought the cpu could be upgraded due to the nature of the specs and sales agenda.

I always thought you could not install HDD's or expansion cards because there is no fucking room in the case.

...are you kidding me... of course yes

I think @Giggitygoebbels is referring to" Quote - Is that 4 dimm slots? "  as a surprise factor, since the majority of LGA2011 motherboards have 8 dim slots. I know not all LGA2011 motherboards have 8 dim slots but most of them do.

I do not think he meant the 4 dim slots as a WOW factor, more of a disappointment statement from how I read it.

It's a PCI e based ssd. It's not a proprietary standard and can be replaced with another non apple pcie ssd

ah okay, cause I was thinking he said something along the lines of "wait is Apple actually using DIMM slots for their RAM? ermahgerd"

one of the things about the Internet is that it is harder to catch what the person on the other side of the monitor is saying..
