I'm sure many of you are like me in that they don't upgrade everything at once, maybe you do a CPU upgrade or a GPU or a full platform, maybe you migrate to a new case. My question to you is this, at what point does it count as a new PC?

My gut feel is that it's either:

a) When you upgrade the platform (New MOBO and probably new CPU)

OR

b) When more than 50% of the major components is new

OR

c) When no original parts remain.

I'm inclined to go with option A because I know storage is something not many people will upgrade as often as a CPU or GPU and things like cases often last several builds.

What do you think?

New platform usually involves a CPU, Motherboard and sometimes ram upgrade, I would consider that a new PC.

For me, when you change out the core components in one fell swoop. IE: Motherboard/CPU/GPU and to a lesser extent RAM.

When you change platforms. I changed from AMD, FX 8350 gang to an i5 Haswell. I consider that a new PC, even though the parts are all used.

If you are using the same platform and are changing from a Ryzen 3 to a Ryzen 7, I consider that an upgrade, NOT a new PC.

Basically, new motherboard.

I don't think of it new unless everything is replaced, including the case.  To me, it's like a car.  You can augment a car.  You can upgrade a car, etc.  It's still the same car with a new engine.  Pretty much to me the only thing that doesn't have to be replaced on a computer to consider it new are the peripherals and monitor(s).

I'm going to go with platform change. Yes you can upgrade the graphics card, hard drives and case and it will make a difference, but i don't feel its as significant as a mobo + CPU change.

Like a broom that has only had two new handles and three new heads.

I'm of the opinion that once all the matter is replaced then it is no longer the original.  If it is an inanimate object, the only thing that dictates what tit are the people that obbserve it. It's not the original boat, it is a representation of the original boat and those who restored it vouch for it's authenticity as a restoration involving the complete replacement of everything.   In the auto restoration world there are restored cars, tribute cars  where not enough of the original car is left to call it genuine and original (genuine) cars.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

To me a new computer is when you replace the main component of it, the CPU. W/O it you have a bunch of parts that don't do jack. That said, if you buy a Gen 8 CPU you have to replace at least the board...

Tho I trolled a few friends a few years ago and called my P4 with a new Mobo 8GB RAM and a GT640 a new computer (more like a new(ish) computer), which was actually me buying parts for a new build(less the ram/mobo). Still ran better than most duos/duals...

The one duo I knew I was able to compare(which still works), My P4 blew it out of the water... So most newer ones likely can do better, so yea guess I was wrong :P

Plus if you are using userbenchmark they don't actually offer different CPU models for the P4, so someone using a old 2002 model who was able to OC it to 3.2Ghz could make P4's look like garbage.

I have a P4 631, 540J and HT 3.2GHz (socket 478). When stock a T7600 is faster, with overclocking my E8500 and both E6500K still being a shitload faster (4-4.5GHz with far higher IPC+lower temps&power consumption)
