Who's getting/got a 8086k?

There was a sweepstake running for a chance to win one, but if you haven't already entered it is too late. I wonder when they'll announce the winners?

I'm debating over buying one regardless. Due to timing I didn't get a 8700k, although I do have a Z370 board with 8350k in it purely for OC fun. In the UK, I see stock in some places already, and if I fancied a 3 hour round trip drive I could even get one today. I don't want it that much... The 8086k is approx. 18% more expensive than a 8700k, which buys you 300 MHz on base and turbo, and a retro name. Personally I'm debating getting one to drop in place of the 8350k and I'd like to bench it against my existing 7800X system.

Please keep this to Intel vs Intel thread, there's enough Intel vs Ryzen threads already we don't need yet another one hashing the same tiered arguments that neither side budges from.

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Only if I win. I got 7 chances xD

Not sure if I would keep it because my i7 4790k is more than enough and I would have to upgrade a lot.

EDIT: Sorry for triggering people. It was not my intention :(

On sale as in, once you can buy them where you are, or on sale as in at discount? Given they're limited edition (in numbers) it will remain to be seen how desirable they are. If they get sold as is or retails might need to drop pricing to move them later on.

The retailer I'm looking at getting mine from shows live stock. It was 48 units when I woke up, and 46 units when I last checked, so they're not exactly flying off the shelves there. They're a lesser known seller though, another bigger one that I wouldn't use claimed they had 1000 units incoming, but they only list stock as 10+. So again, can't really tell if they're shifting. Another preferred supplier of mine doesn't have stock listed, and Amazon UK don't list it at all.

I wouldn't consider myself a typical user. I actually run most of my systems stock, unless I'm doing competitive overclocking. So I will get value from higher base clocks, as well as potential if they have binned these CPUs...

I was a good fish and only entered once, but whatever happens, happens.

Upgrading from Haswell is some extra steps... new ram and mobo even if you reuse everything else. Still, I'm sure if you won one it wouldn't be difficult to resell and you can get yourself an upgrade elsewhere.

I mean, I entered the sweepstakes once, does that count as attempting to get it? :P That chances of actually winning are going to be hilariously low, so good luck to anyone here who enters.

Maybe we'll never know how many entered, but at least it isn't like most other "giveaways" where there's only a single prize. I even occasionally do the lottery knowing that statistically it doesn't make sense. Sometimes, it is better to be lucky than good.

I've just given in and ordered one from Novatech for just under £380. However I note Novatech and Scan both sell the 8700k at £320, which is what I was basing the 18% difference in price on.

Since my 8700k is already as good as a 8086k due to luck in the silicon lottery, no need. But i participated to win one.

There isnt much room for improvement when your 8700k can already do 5.2 @1.35v though.

So if i win i'll most likely donate it to one of my favorite small streamers in need of new Hardware on Twitch.tv.

I'd only looked at the price on overclockers, still worth the extra £60 for the novelty imo, and it'll have higher resale value later down the line.

So you ordered it out of “nostalgia”? Or do you consider using the CPU?

If I had money and had personal experience with an 8086, then I'd probably buy one for nostalgia. But, since I'm too young to have used an ancient CPU like that, and since I'm broke AF, I'll pass.

Still a cool CPU, though, but I wish it had some sort of cool design on the heat spreader, maybe the old Intel logo (wasn't it just an "i")?

Quote me to see my reply!

My interests include prime number finding, and I'm getting into competitive overclocking. It should be good for both. I'm not going into this blind. Already have a system with 8350k in it and I'll just swap it over, don't need anything else extra. I can decide later on to either resell the 8350k or get another mobo for it.

you can buy binned 8700k's for around 420USD so if the 8086k is around that price and you really want a binned chip i would say go for it

I don't think I'd ever buy a binned CPU, at least not if it costs more than boxed retail. Part of the fun is finding the limit yourself.

well in that case why do you consider buying a 8086k? which is a binned chip in the first place.

if you want the fun finding out yourself save some money and get the 8700k and find out what you get
