Why do people have so many browser tabs open?

JoostinOnline

I rarely have more than 7 or 8 tabs open.  I certainly don't want more than what will fit on my screen.  I often see people talk about having 50-100 tabs open though.  What's the appeal of that?  First off, there's no way you could keep track of them all, and second, nobody is searching that many subjects at once.  So why?

I have about 20 open with dual monitors. It’s for stuff that gets updated every few days like manga or comics. YouTube channels I want to watch but not subscribe(spammy). A few news site and twitter. Forums, save for later guides/pages. And then you have current session tabs. That adds up around 20ish for me.

Depends on what I'm doing. Normal browsing is anywhere from 5-10 for me usually. Doing research will lead to some papers and other stuff, counting for an extra 5 or 10 maybe. Most of the time it's due to some coding or debugging that needs to be done. Depending on the complexity of the issue I'm dealing with the number of tabs raises steadily.

for porn, you open a video, then another

for real now, i don't do it that often, but when i'm researching something, personally or for work or even troubleshooting tech i can easily end up with 20+ tabs open

When I'm studying for an exam, I usually search for information on multiple sites which does require to open a lot of pages. But it still happens when I'm shopping online and I can't decide which product I'd really like to buy, so I prefer comparing them.

I usually stay within 10 tabs, but when I get into reading articles, I can get to ~25 tabs rather easily

how many is "too many"

Normal browsing for me is 5-10, plus about the same amount for "saved for later" articles and research topics and whatnot. Then about 5 for YT or shopping sites, and if I'm studying (like I should right now instead of commenting on this forum) or researching some topic I can easily open over 20 new tabs for that.

Also when I work from home I tend to open about 15 new tabs, but I move it to a different browser window

Also when $h!t gets real, I switch the browser to full screen window, which on my glorious 21:9 ultrawide allows for A LOT of open tabs :D

When doing some form of project/research I'll have like 15 if it's a lot. Otherwise I don't understand these guys who 'need' 32Gb of RAM because they use 200 tabs...

That's an F in the profile pic

I just saw someone on here who said he usually had at least 100 tabs open.

I'm at a conservative 20 tabs on one screen and 10 on the other. It's just useful having everything ready. Sometimes it eats up to 10GB of ram but... oh well..

its for very specific links you dont want to type out but also need every couple of days or so.

the tabs for me happen when i research something. maybe a rare use case coding example or maybe hardware for a build. ill open like 20 different cases on a online store and then go though them and eliminate the ones that dont appeal at a closer look at the specs. then i usually end up with like half of them and repeat with being pickier this time until i end up with like 2-3.

Back in college when I’m cross referencing journals for a paper I have at least five to ten tabs on my PC...

I know a few people that have that many tabs open.

It's moderately hilarious when watching YouTube and not being able to figure out what tab the audio is coming from.

Tabs can build up over time, if I never closed my browser when I was done browsing, I would definitely accumulate 50 ish tabs open/day.

They have the RAM to spare, most likely.

I couldn't have that many tabs open without needing a bigger screen just so I can read the names of all the tabs so I don't have to remember them all.

A challenge to you - a week without closing tabs. While using Opera for browsing! (Not sure if other browsers save the opened tabs when you close the browser)

No can do. 8Gb of RAM can really limit your multitasking abilities, especially when it's on your gaming rig.

But you can close the browser when you want to game and resume when you are done if you use Opera. It saves the opened tabs. Some of the tabs have been opened for a month on my desktop xD

Firefox does that too. Most tabs I don't even really need open all the time, which is why I close them all.

When I open Firefox, it opens up to the new tab screen so I can start browsing pretty much wherever I want: forums, email, youtube, etc. All from one screen :D

I don't use much tabs although I could. We used to be poor, my computer at the time was worse than a rotten russian potato and I had to keep processes to a minimum, hence tabs to a minimum. Now that the company runs like a charm, I possess a high-end computer, but I am so conditioned to my old lifestyle that I still close all the tabs "I don't need".
