Windows 7 in 2018?

GeneralOxxy

Is windows 7 worth it in 2018? Since windows 10 got cortana using my memory and cpu for no reason even after i turned it off will windows 7 (64bit) be faster? And i don't need microsoft installing games in my pc without asking me and stealing my privacy ;-;

Cortana doesn't use memory or CPU if you don't use it.

it will be "faster" untill support for the OS fades and it becomes worse than Win 10. there is some difference, but last time i checked it is quite small

note how that is 0,3% usage and 40 mb of ram. like it is something, but not really. are you shure youve completely turned it off?

Whether Windows 7 is worth it is subjective. Alot of that is statements rather than a question, so I'll avoid everything else and just answer your question.

Sorry but the answer is "it depends".

Windows 10 has some pretty serious under the hood tweaks to improve performance. But it also has a lot more over head.

On older hardware Windows 7 is likely to perform better.

On newer hardware Windows 10 is likely to perform better.

On systems with very little RAM Windows 10 performs *way* better.

It's going to depend on your hardware and what you're doing, but in many cases the speed difference between the two is likely negligable.

That 40mb (MB? mB? mB?) of RAM probably isn't actually taking up 40MB of RAM. A lot of that is probably paged.

Unless you're actively working with it, having stuff in memory doesn't hurt anything. Clearing memory is *crazy* fast. That's the whole reason why superfetch and prefetching is a thing.

go win 10, don't worry about cortana using cpu - lol, install your win as in other region, you won't get cortana at all.

Yes you can use win 7, but many programs may require windows 10.

To be safe install win 7 and program version that supports it.

Most software still supports Windows 7.

"Most"

All recent games still do as well.

If it wasn't for software I used daily and VR performing better in W10 I'd still be on Windows 7.

Are you kidding?

Do you actually think that makes a difference?

That's because there's other OS stuff being done in the background under the cortana label.

You can perfectly use Windows 7 today, i still do.

Can you still use Windows 7 after it's eol? You can, but you shouldn't. Unless you keep it offline.

I have a system with XP on it, no internet connection, perfectly fine to use that. I mean for some old-school games i just have to. Windows 7 or newer refuses to work properly and a VM doesn't work either.

While Windows 7 is still usable I wouldn't recommend it for a 'daily' OS anymore since it is becoming much less secure and from what I've seen they are slowing down update servers for it (a really cheap way of getting people to move over to Windows 10).

The thing about Win10 is, it's not a bad system per se - it just takes a few moments and/or internet guides to set it up properly so it will not annoy you with updates and other shit.

I was fearing the change but since my new system uses m.2 nvme ssd as main storage, I had to move for Win10 (trying to get it working for Win7 would be a pain). 15 minutes watching few guides on how to configure essentials and the transition was seamless to me.

I have a copy of all Windows versions since XP that I can boot to on my main desktop PC.

Although... the XP version is a bit tricky, especially concerning connecting to the internet.

However, my daily OS that I use on all devices (except Apple) is Windows 10. For “normal” use, I wouldn’t recommend any other onr as a daily OS though.

I think that Windows will continue to be usable even in 2025. Just have a good antivirus program running if you're concerned about malware and if you have unsafe browsing / downloading habits. I haven't updated my Windows 7 OS in 3 years, and haven't had a single issue.

What's a game that needs the Windows XP installation? Just curious.

All the Windows 7 security updates are identical to the Windows 10 security updates. So, I would think that Windows 7 and Windows 10 are both equally secure.
