i7 4790K is its still good?

Hi,

Just wanting to know whether my i7 4790K CPU is will still be capable to run games, render and encode well for the next 5 years?

So far I've notice high CPU temps around 30 to 40 degrees in games like a Fortnite but wasnt sure if its related to the early access optimisation.  Also Watch dogs 2, Witcher 3 and GTA V which are more demanding titles.

Running these around high and very high settings at 1080p and hitting around 60-120 FPS.

My GPU and cooler I'm using is Nvidias GTX 980ti and Corsair's H100i cooler.

I'm also a Architect student mainly using Autodesk Revit which is more CPU demanding regarding rendering.

Also encoding media files via handbrake alot.

Will my CPU last over 5 years for 1080p gaming, or should I upgrade to Intel's i7 8700k for productivity for work?

Cheers.

5 years? Likely not.. 3yrs is probably stretching it at this point to be "decent"  for rendering and encoding work. Gaming it will be fine, but it will really struggle in real work loads to keep up with the newer chips.

Definitely the 8700k for productivity.

The 4790k will handle games from this generation only, most likely not games released in 2019 to 2024.

The 8700k will be your best choice.

Only you can say for yourself whether its enough or not... personally I'd try waiting for the 8 cores coffee lake variant coming in September.

Ryzen 7 2700X is not a bad processor but it has it's issues, for a more rock solid stable and compatible workstation I still prefer Intel... Ryzen has numerous software issues specially with Adobe.

While none of us can see the future, I seriously doubt it. Over the past year, Intel has moved from two/four core to four/six cores. Soon they'll be making eight core CPU's. The quad core should have reached its end in a few years, and developers don't design their games around the weakest hardware.

Mind linking me to some reading material on that? I haven't heard of any issues. My attention has been more focused on Intel since Coffee Lake though.

This video summers it up pretty good, my brother has been having the same issues described in this video with his R7 1800X and from talking to other members here they have also stated minor glitches here and there... AMD simply doesn't get the same attention Intel does by these gigantic software companies.

Which is a huge shame don't get me wrong I wish Ryzen was allowed to fly high as ever, but you know how people like parroting that "workstation/content creation" Ryzen is some sort of God? well not really...

50c isnt even close to warm on that chip, i run mine at 5GHz ~70C with a delid. temps are super fine. it will however not hold up for another 5 years most likely but i would use it untill you cant anymore

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Same. If there are issues, it would have been all over the news given Ryzen's success.

Excuse me, but I've watched that video and when using high speed RAM, Ryzen is still significantly faster on renders. The only quibble seems to be doing pre-render previews of footage. That seems much more like an issue with the current version of Adobe Premiere, since I didn't hear any reivewer share similar issues during earlier periods.

Even if you ignore that, the OP is using Autodesk software, which had no issues in my school for Ryzen's many cores. Your video is purely focused on Adobe Premiere.

Probably not for 5 more years, but at least 2. I'm still very happy with the performance of my 4790k. If i were you i would definitely wait for the 8 core i7's later this year. This is what i'm gonna do at least.

5 years, nope.

Because you often do workstation stuff. For now stick with what you have and if you have the money and are sick of it being slow, get the best ryzen you can afford and upgrade to that. I would get an 8-core model if you can afford it because it will help a lot for your use case and you will use all the cores so it's imo worth spending a bit more.

If you want my attention, quote meh! D: or just stick an @samcool55 in your post :3

4790k Is a great cpu if u already have one but I wouldn't buy one,

intel stoped making them now so if it dies u won't get a replacement (that's was intels response to me when mine died, they gave me money back)

Ddr3 will be a bit lacking now, if ur buying may aswell get on a new platform

ryzen 1700's are cheep as chips and are amazing at 4ghz for gaming rendering encoding ect

if u need the extra fps over 120 then a delidded 8700k at 5ghz is probs ur best bet
