Do I buy a proper chair or a monitor?

jasonwj322a

Hello,

I have around $700 and am wondering if I should spend that money on a monitor or a new chair. I don't currently have monitor and am using the laptop screen, this can frustrating at times. This is also means I'll be driving the monitor with my laptop since I don't have a desktop. I'll have to buy a keyboard but I some I can currently use as a placeholder.

For the chair I actually bought a new one a few months ago at Staples, it's okay but can get uncomfortable after extended period use. Think it was around the $100, my parents were the ones paying so I didn't pick anything expensive.

I'm now thinking of buying either a monitor or a better chair. I have my eyes laid on a few monitors most of which are curved ultrawides, think they're pretty cool. As for chairs I'm looking at the Herman Miller Aeron or Embody but am open to more suggestions.

What do you guys think? At some point I'd like to get both to complete my "dream setup".

absolutely a monitor. most chairs are good enough and good posture in that chair will help. a 100-200$ chair will treat you very well. Buying a good monitor will upgrade your whole experience.

TLDR a DECENT office chair with good posture will take you a long way, and a new monitor will upgrade everything :)

Ooo decisions decisions. What are you doing with your laptop? Can it even run games on an ultrawide screen? Or do you just need the extended real estate for something else?

Personally, I'd go with the chair, however check out eBay. I was buying Herman Miller open box chairs and selling them for a profit. I think they were about $350US? Very good deals. Granted you have to watch for a while, as they might not have your size, but they'll pop up eventually. Both of these can last you through many builds, so I fully support investing in quality units.

He wasn't considering one. He's looking at high quality ergonomic chairs.

If you've never used one, you don't know what you're missing.

Don't really need a desktop when the laptop is enough.

I'd say monitor, But I'm rather Biased, I'm using a ~14 year old office chair, I expect it to keep going for many more years, so I don't understand all these "need a new chair" questions.

I'd say a chair.

Do not underestimate the long term ability for a chair to ruin your body.

I payed € 750ish for my chair, which is A LOT of money. What I got is ergonomic durable & flexible.

Wanne Netflix no chill? Just pull the arm rests down, turn a lever & lean back. Want to do some serious typing, move the arm rests close together & type for hours without strain.

I had a cheap chair from IKEA before, it worked it sat fine.

But if you are like me and I assume many others on this forum sitting at your desk for 4 hours without standing up can be something you do daily.

Also keep in mind the durability & materials, some will mind it less when a chair squeaks. But I have a ass that likes to move & ears that likes silence :P

But in the end it is what you feel is best for you.

My 3 1080P panels still serve me fine, one being 75hertz.

Do what you feel would benefit you more & use the money to its fullest.

I'd say a good chair. Maybe a refurb Aeron.

Don't underestimate the importance of a good, high quality (I.E. almost none of the gamer chairs) chair in maintaining decent health while enjoying a hobby that requires sitting.

For $750 you can get both a good monitor (1440p high refresh rate) for $500 and still have $250 for a half-decent chair.

I'd get the monitor. With a desktop type setup (with laptop instead of the tower obvs) you may well find you current chair becomes more comfortable. Laptops are an ergonomic disaster.

Yeah this.

Herman Millers are good, but probably over priced because of their name. But it's a good idea to go for a proper ergonomic chair that will benefit you for long periods of time you'll be using it, as it's an investment in your health. I scored myself a very expensive (I worked it out to be around $600 AUD in the end) ergonomic chair for $60 from a local auction house. It's worth looking out for such a thing second hand because sometimes people just want to off load really good chairs for a cheap price.

As for a monitor, depending what you want but i'd be certain you can get both a good monitor (without something like G-Sync) & a good chair for the $700 USD you have to spend.

A decent 4k or 144hz 1440p monitor will run you about $400 (less for 4k, there's that Sceptre one for $250) and you'll have $300 left over for a chair, so yes.

From knowing a lot of old people I say chair.

From watching the best channel with the best messages I say buy this one:

https://usa.clutchchairz.com/product/pewdiepie-edition-throttle-series/

but seriously. I know 3 chiropractors. Lumbar support, neck support. If you’re sitting, you NEED IT. I just came from an office where they have bad chairs and I told them to get lumbar pillows. They couldn’t believe how much better it was for their young aching backs.

Edit:

also i know a lot of old people with back problems. You don’t want those.
