Which VPN to choose?

Hey guys,

 

I know Linus promotes Tunnelbear, but I, as a VPN n00b, would like to know what I should look for when choosing a VPN.

Is it possible to get a VPN to even play online games with?

I appreciate any alternatives to tunnelbear.

Not anymore. They split from Tunnelbear and partnered with PIA. 

 

I've been using PIA for 4 months now and recently bought a 2 year subscription after being very happy with my experience for three months. You can play online games with pretty much any VPN, but bear in mind it will have an impact on your ping, just due to the nature of VPNs.

Is there any difference between tunnelbear, Nord VPN and PIA VPN? (Is PIA this one?)

One of the main differences is that TunnelBear doesn't support P2P traffic, such as torrents. NordVPN also blocks some P2P ports apparently. 

 

PIA has a massive amount of available servers so often the speeds are very good and the pricing is good. TunnelBear is fairly expensive compared to the other two and also has the most downsides, so I would recommend either NordVPN or PIA. 

 

NordVPN is based in Panama, PIA in USA and TunnelBear in Canada. 

 

Also, yeah, that's PIA.

I live in germany so I just hope they have enough servers here too lol. Thanks for the information!

If you're in Germany, then most of the European servers will provide you with fairly good ping. 

 

I find myself using the Sweden servers most of the time, but there's servers in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Norway etc. etc. that will all give good results.

I was wondering if anyone had used Mullvad before? I see it listed beside NordVPN on some of the recommendation sites people have posted in other threads and I am unsure on how it compares to other VPNs.

I'm currently using PIA and it's a blast, have very little speed interference which was a must for me, and overall safety in my opinion for consumer use is great for the price u pay.

 

Biggest pro from PIA is the massive amount of servers worldwide and especially Europe, i live in the Netherlands so that was needed to reduce the speed interference from the VPN.

Yeah, they do.. I often use the German/Netherlands/Switzerland/Sweden etc servers.. I used to use the German servers all the time, but now mix it up a bit between the above instead. Speeds are pretty good, I get roughly 4Mbit/s below max speed on most servers on my PC.

I think in this situation you would need a VPN with many servers to choose from so ping while gaming could be minimised by choosing the best one for you. I would choose something like NordVPN (over 4000) or TorGaurd (over 3000). Though I would choose Nord because it is a bit cheaper
