Finally had enough of Windows 10, so what next?

Jake.E20

Hey guys, as the title suggests I have finally had enough of Windows 10. The last straw has finally done it for me. It promised so much and it did deliver, but the way it has been made to update automatically and the ways that have been utilised to get people to upgrade from the previous OS is ridiculous. I may be hating on it a bit much but I no longer feel I have the freedom to do whatever I want with my computer I feel like everything I do is watched by our overlords. Cortana constantly wants to be turned on so she can harvest my data  help me with my day to day tasks. The privacy concerns are only growing and are not getting better in my opinion. Somehow every time I start my PC spotify and other programs I used seems to load up without me doing anything, yes hibernation is off and there is no programs running on startup or in task scheduler. I hate how it seems everytime I need to quickly restart my computer there is updates that are needed to install. We shouldn't have to go to the local group policy just so we can get the option to restart without updating. It honestly saddens me that windows 10 is going to be the last windows and in the not too distant future it will be the only OS that Microsoft offers mainstream support on. With the recent going's on with facebook's user data being used the way it has, it worry's me how much data a company can actually collect from you even when you think it isn't too much on you, it all adds up.

With that rant out of the way I request everyone's opinions and knowledge. I have a Ryzen CPU and would like one of the previous windows (Either 7 or 8.1) I know that windows 8.1 for a fact is not supported for Ryzen and apparently doesn't get updates without the unofficial path, win 7 as well?? (I am not too well informed of the details on this however) as for windows 7 I honestly don't know too much about Ryzen support on it as I know AMD has the chipset drivers for that but not 8.1. Is there a reason I should or shouldn't go to one of these older OS's? Gaming performance is one thing for me but that is less important than privacy IMO.

These are just my opinons guys and I do not mean to offend anyone by this.

Thank you LTT community.

AMD gives Linux drivers but other than moving to Linux you only other option is to turn your rig into a Hackintosh (though we cannot discuss how to do that on this forum)

Your CPU simply will not work with older versions of Windows.

1) you can disable cortana

2) you can disable the programs auto starting, it's called "pick up where i left off"

3) automatic updates are there because 99% of people (including you) think it's ok to just disable them because they don't understand any security risks.

Maybe if you spent some time looking through the settings you wouldn't have so many complaints.

The only thing I can recommend is using Wine for Linux just so you can use SOME of those windows programs. Even then, some of those features can be disabled.

You can hide it from the task bar, disable it, but when you end the process tree cortana still comes back even when you have it completely disabled.

The "pick up where I left off" feature is part of the cortana package and having is disabled should not even have any of these settings. Google pick up where I left off windows 10 and click the one that is addictivetips .

Not all updates that are installed automatically are security updates, granted there are a lot, but not all of them.

How about windows 10 ltsb?

You only have security updates for 10 years and no feature updates. And you can turn off all tracking.

I see it as a way for them to cover their own ass when it comes to security risks, by forcing users to update instead of allowing them to disable updates while having full function. It is halfway a scapegoat though for data harvesting, which is why it's important to also revise privacy related settings that may (WILL) be reset through updates.

TOSes can be, and are always changed.

You can still disagree. Signing the TOS changes nothing about users opinions.

You can use W7 if the bios doesn't use the latest AGESA because that breaks W7 support.

It can be done tho, i have a system here with an R5 1600 and on windows 7 perfectly stable.

If you agree to a certain set of TOS, while not really agreeing with them or later on deciding you no longer agree with that same set (or fail to revise changes and still agree to them) then it isn't really the fault of the product at all but fully the user...it's very simple really

Did you ever get the message saying unsupported hardware and not getting updates? Have you run the unofficial patch to get around it?

Had the message twice, first time after a month and second time after 6-ish months. Patched it twice with the same patch (the second time it was a newer version of the patch) and it has been up-to-date with official windows updates from the update thingy that's in w7 since the beginning.

AMD provides full Ryzen support for at least Windows 7. Here are AMD's official Ryzen chipset drivers for Windows 7:

https://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows 10 - 64

Windows 7 should run fine on either new AMD or Intel CPUs anyway, even without an official chipset patch for them.

Is that something that is going to be fixed? I read that the new AGESA version is still in early-development stage - although, that was some months ago:

If you browse the web in any way shape or form, you're being tracked, even if you have an AdBlocker installed. I block ads to speed up my web browsing, as some news sites take 5x as long to load with ads enabled, but could care less about tracking data since it's going to happen whether I like it or not. You can disconnect from the internet, but then you have to worry about the government and banks / credit card issuers tracking your spending habits instead, so really, you'd have to become a bushwhacker to not be tracked in our digital world.
