awesome to have you on board! what are the specs of your office rig you're crunching with?

I'm new also. I've been crunching for WCG for a few years, but really want to use my card also. Putting my old 7870 to use as I have effectively free power at my student accommodation, so I'll hopefully run 12-24 hours p/d (unless it dies as its 6 years old) :D  But seriously thinking about getting a better card for BF5. So I'm open to suggestions as to what card that could/should be...

How much are you looking to spend on the GPU?

Well dollar figures may not be useful as I'm in $NZD. But I've been mulling over anything from a 1070 to perhaps a 2070.. They'd both take care of BF5 fairly comfortably, but would there be a significant difference between the two gen's with regards to folding?

Turing (20xx) cards are great at folding. This is a good reference of how well cards perform. A 2070 has double the PPD compared to a 1070.

Wait for the 1160. You’ll have more money left over for pizza and beer.

The RTX 2060 I suspect will be a really good value proposition for folding and if the rumours are true and they release an 1160 without the Ray Tracing that would be even better for folding but, then again, BF5 is one of the few titles that supports ray tracing.

Tbh, for BF I just want something that will play this and the next release comfortably. I don't require the absolute, ultimate frame rates. The 2060 sounds like an interesting proposition. How long after the release of a card, does it usually take to get some PPD figures popping up on this forum?

Wow ok, after looking at that chart, it seems that a Turing card is in my future.. Seems silly to buy the old architecture and use similar watts to produce far less points/results. Sounds like this 2060 will be interesting..

Anandtech is about the only site that tests and publishes single precision compute numbers using FAHBench.  If you compare the numbers they post against the 1070, 2070 and 1060 it should give you a pretty good idea of the real world performance.

Note that FAHBench reports results in a number relevant to Biologists but which does not take into account the Quick Return Bonus Stanford uses to reward returning results quickly so it’s not an exact comparison but it is close enough for comparison.

If the cards aren’t too outrageously priced I might pick one up and if I do I’ll report the results here.

man i really hope the next gen cards are either gonna be good for folding, or when they release they bring turing prices down enough to warrant me buying those.

i still have a 4U server chassis waiting for 4 GPU's ;)

Looks like there's been a few new WUs added in the wake of 14124. Welcome to point hell bois. 14125 and 14152. 14152 is an 11000 point base WU, so it's a similar finish time to the 17k units. 14125 is a 31800 point base WU, so much closer to 14124 (which is 38000 base), but not quite as long. I believe there is one more that I'm missing, one of my GPUs completed one earlier and I don't remember the number.

edit: Ah yes there was another, 14126. This is a 30400. It leans closer to the longer 14 series units, but it's not quite as long, coming in at about 80% of the time of a 14124 WU.

Hi all, Just thought i would chirp in on Cereal5's post. Does this mean that you could specify which WUs you want to process and ignore the others giving you more points?

Just checked my F@H points and was pleased to see the following:

Team LinusTechTips_Team
Score 203,363
WUs 37
Date of last work unit 2019-01-07 06:35:02
Active clients (within 50 days) 0
Active clients (within 7 days) 4

No lol, that would mean everyone would only do the same WU over and over again... But it might mean Stanford would find a better way of balancing point production. Granted that's probably an extremely difficult task in the first place, so I don't imagine that it will ever be anywhere near perfect.

Thanks for the clear reply, That makes sense,. I just saw some chatter the other day when i was researching F@H and saw people talking about using specific flags or something.

You can fairly easily specify what type of research you're interested in, and some of those have "nicer" blocks than others.  But even that is just a preference, not a guarantee, for type of work unit, still not specific WUs.

These "14" series WUs ?

Ah yes there was another, 14126. This is a 30400 point base unit. It leans closer to the longer 14 series units, but it's not quite as long, coming in at about 80% of the time of a 14124 WU. The good news in all of this is that all of the longer 14k WUs bring in well over 100k points for a single completion on any mid range GPU and up, bringing in about 180k on my overclocked Strix 1080, and about the same on my 50% power limit MSI 1080 Ti Gaming X. I would expect a 1070 Ti, 1080, and power limited 1080 Ti to all bring in around there in points, with a maxed out 1080 Ti most likely netting 200k+. I really want my 100,000:1 point to WU ratio back lol.

Also, for those interested, a 750 Ti brings about 50% of the points per WU of a 1080, at about 5.5 times the estimated TPF.
