I ended up locating a high quality one in my basement that I couldn't find before, it's much heavier feeling so we'll see how it does.

Good thing it didn't fry anything else...

Thankfully the PSU is a Seasonic so the PSU side of things is stout and pretty much OK.

Ouch - was that connected to the mining card? It looks like a combination of bad crimps on the molex pins, possibly loose connections and likely too small a gauge (18AWG?) of wire.

I have a couple of cheaters I got with EVGA cards so I trust those.

Yes it was, card draws about 100W on average so....the the one from my basement is from BFG so you know it's quality!

Yeah clearly, also shitty crimps or shitty terminals or all 3.

I told the eBay seller I didn't care if I got my money back, I just wanted them to stop selling them before they kill someone.

It is, it's on my list of things to get. I need to get a good used budget 450-550W unit with nice low ripple for stability.

Got my LTT folding shirt.  Looks good, actually nice sizes.  Lots of brands have their larges as childs larges, and XL as a high school large.  This seems like an appropriate sized XL.

Didn't think there were any Core21 WUs still running but according to the Project stats there is still 34 of them.

Oof. Had a bit of a hiccup with my folding. One day the computer started acting weird and my web browser kept crashing completely randomly. Games worked fine but everything felt a bit weird.

So I did what every rational person would do.
1. Reboot computer several times including a longer shutdown - no effect
2. Reinstall web browser. -> no effect
3. Change to another web browser -> no effect

4. Uninstall some softwares in case they messed up something -> no effect
5. Uninstall F@h and try to reinstall -> F@H crashes and refuses to start folding
6. Remove GPU from riser cable to put it in another slot and end up reconfiguring the insides of my case and moving about all my PCI-E SSD cards to make room for the GPU -> no effect
7. Try to launch GeForce Experience to download new drivers -> instant crash... A-HA!
8. Reinstall GEF and new drivers manually from NVidia. -> Presto! Everything works!

In the end I think something went wrong with automatic driver updates while F@H was running and the drivers got corrupted. Or it could be black magic... In the end everything works again and I am off to chase that 100M milestone! 💪

I had an overnight hiccup as well, the uh USB stopped working on Fold1. All of it. Only the PS2 keyboard was working. Took a couple reboots to get it running right again. I'm starting to have doubts about something in this system being stable, I just don't know what's up. I need to go through the BIOS and disable all the parts I'm not using like onboard audio and stuff. Hopefully it's just a quirk with the USB Wifi dongle and having wired network will just make USB drop out a non issue.

i should probbaly put some kind of feet under this thing. maybe some home audio stuff?

That is one monster of a CPU block

OK - so I'm new to F@H.

I had a spare core i7-7700K sitting around so I set it up (Win 10). The only extra GPU I have is a GTX 710. Reading up on supported GPUs for F@H, some lists said it would work, while others never listed the 7XX series.

I tried it out with the latest nVidia drivers. However, F@H shows no GPU and no detected Cuda Cores. So, I'm guessing it isn't supported, or I need to do something else to get it recognized.

Any ideas?

If the GTX 710 isn't supported, what would you recommend as a decent GPU for this that I can get CHEAP (used GPUs is perfectly fine for me)?

i probably am, tough i'm in the middle of moving houses so i won't be very active. i can throw some hardware at the marathon tough, like last year.

i also have two 8 core xeons to throw at it.

Welcome to the Team!

I'd look at a new GTX 1650Super or 1660Ti or Super rather than spending money on old hardware. The newer chips will get much more points than the older and consume less power. The 1660Ti/Super should get around 750,000PPD or about the same as a used 1070Ti would. at almost twice the power.

A 1060 6GB can yield around 450-500,000 PPD, likely what a 1650 would. In general Pascal and Turing work best and Kepler and Maxwell will work but will consume considerably more power.

Dropped down to GPU folding only for now, need CPU for some old games I want to play and it's watt/ppd return is too low to bother with currently especially with things warming up finally for the spring/summer.

Also RIP the canadian dollar right now.

A GTX1650Ti/Super would cost less and produce about the same number of points as a GTX1070 for far less power consumed. I tend to laugh when I see these guys try to see used mining gear for ridiculous amounts of money.

A used 1070 from a mining rig I would even look at unless they were going for like $100Cdn and even then saving that and putting it towards a 1660Ti/Super would go a lot further

Hey Guys,

We could really use as much help as possible on the BOINC Pentathlon. Rosetta is the Marathon staring May 5th at 00:00GMT and running for 14 days. It is a CPU project and like F@H is working on COVID.

BTW - I'm the Idiot and write these things up so I can remember them later 🤪
