What's more important monitor or windows?

So... I've ordered my pc and I have about 100€ left (120$). And I have a choice left. Buy windows 10 home or get Linux and upgrade my really old monitor which is somewhere 720p with a weird format 30x38cm (11.81x14.96 inch for y'all americans), it looks like a square.

What would you do in this situation and why?

Yeah that's true, I forgot about that.

Definitely a temporary solution because of the annoying message in the bottom corner but really useful in this case.

That's how I'm going to be using windows 10 until the end of time, no way I'm paying Microsoft money to spy on me and take away control over updates. The watermark isn't really an issue.

You can probably do both.  A 1080p/60hz monitor will be a BIG improvement and windows can be had for free if you don't mind the activation reminder in the bottom right corner, or for cheap through kinguin or another vendor of keys.

Wait WHAT!? You get windows 10 for free with just a little annoying notification at the bottom? WHAT'S THE BUSINESS STRATEGY BEHIND THAT?!?!? Just like winrar infinite 40 day trial?

Get a new monitor and don't activate Windows. Done, both problems solved.

It's meant to annoy users, but in reality it doesn't do anything. You won't be able to change a few very small personality things until you activate, but it's no problem. You can get around them.

People are going to pirate windows anyways, and it gets their windows 10 numbers up because it's a terrible OS but it's our only option so...

Will it bug me in anyway if I'm in full screen playing a game?

I don't think it affects full screen applications, I'm not certain though. It shouldn't bother you though. It's a small watermark.

Doing a little research, does the background set workaround still work or did they patch it?

You just have to set as background ya, can't use the "Personalize" Menu

They have probably adopted a similar business model like WinRar. It is technically a shareware program but when the timer runs out, they ask you to pay but allow you to keep using it. They are more concerned with market share and brand recognition than getting paid by every user. Even though MS wants you to pay, they would rather you have a reliable, feature rich, stable, and secure version of Windows and not pay than use a legit older version that may put a sour taste in your mouth and tarnish the brand through word of mouth. Having positive word of mouth has a certain value to it that can be greater than a simple sale.

At this point they are likely counting mostly on sales from OEMs and enterprise who will pay without even thinking because they can't afford downtime and want 24/7 support. Sure, they also profit from users who still pay but this is clearly not the MS of old who would annoy the hell out of you and make your life difficult because you didn't have a genuine copy of Windows. MS is a slow moving giant but they are definitely moving in the right direction IMO.

Anyway, I haven't paid for a single version of Win 10 yet. I got the free upgrade on my Gaming PC (although I did pay for the copy of Win 7 I came from) and on my recent notebook purchase, I just used the media creation tool to get a free copy. I probably will actually purchase a key at some point though because I do believe in supporting software companies even when they are multibillion dollar corporations (I know some people view that as a justification for piracy, etc).

And I do think Win 10 is worth paying for. I prefer Linux but I have zero qualms about using Win 10. It's a really nice OS even if I do like Linux more.

Either use it for free with the watermark, or buy it for like $30 on kinguin when you have the cash.

Isn't it possible to remove the watermark through a registry edit anyway?

I imagine there is a way, regedit or otherwise.

Does the mark wait 30 days to appear? I still haven't seen it yet on my laptop...
