GTX 970 Blower fan and parents problem

[Hiya!]

Hi, i am new in the forum.

I need your help to convince my parents.

So i am still a college student i dont have a job even though i really want one but my parents forbid it they say i must focus on my study first.

So each time i need something i must ask them for money.

That is not the problem the problem is when i want to buy something that is not my needs its more something that i want like a gadget or hardware,etc

I have to really explain it to them on why i need them so it will make sense and just pray to god hoping that they will buy it for me.

I have a referrence GTX 970 its loud and get hot at loud and my case doesnt have a good airflow ( FD DEFINE C)

It runs hot and loud when running heavy AAA title like wicther 3,etc even though its rarely thermal throttled.

And its not the thermal paste.

I want to replace it with artic accelero turbo 3.

So here's my conversation with my dad.

Me : Dad i need to talk to you about something

Dad : What is it?

Me : ( me trying to explain why referrence cooler is loud and hot )

Dad : So what happen when it gets hot?

Me : Well it will thermal throttled and drop its performance to prevent overheating

Dad : So there's no problem then?

Me : Well when that happen my games will runs really slow for a little while.

Dad : Whats the big deal then? its only for a little while

Me : Yes but it can get really annoying when it happen

Dad : Does it often happen? is there anything you can do to prevent it?

Me : Well i can make it work less harder by turning down graphical settings so it wont runs too hot

Dad : Well thats it problem solved whats the point of this conversation?

Me : But dad even though i did it its still get hot and loud

Dad : So what? you are using that headset of yours,You wont hear it just like when i am trying to call u for dinner from downstairs because you wear that thing and your room has air conditioner, anything else?

Me : Its not me that gets hot but the GPU and it can degrade its lifespan, I just want u to buy me a GPU cooler its just cost $50 please dad.

Dad : Absolutely not you are not wasting more money for that piece of junk u promised me before that you wont be asking more money for a pc parts when i finally give u the money to build it.

Me : Ok i am sorry. *crying internally

Before u ask i am a good student i have a good grade and i try to limit my time playing video games and focus on my studies.

 

What can i do to convince them? should i just use this GPU before i can finally afford to buy a better one?

Open the side panel. Clean the gpu fan and heatsink from dust. Undervolt the gpu or just set the power slider to 70% in msi afterburner.

Its not going to degrade just because its a bit warmer, since you can bios mod maxwell now you could undervolt the card. Or just take the side panel off.

Im not a parent, and will never actually have kids, but I'm on your father's side. your arguments aren't very convincing, you shot yourself in the foot multiple times. trying to give him a different reason now will make you sound desperate and might even think you're lying, it's going to cause more troubles than it's worth. just wait until you can get a job and you can buy all the crap you want. also to someone who doesn't understand computer hardware, it is a waste of money, so there's likely going to be nothing you can do to convince him.

 

But while you live with your parents you have to live by their rules

Did that every 1 months.

But i never open the side panel its just not safe, my maid or people can accidentally pour some water to it.

My GPU is not idk but when i undervolt even for a little bit the performance will be unstable. Bad silicon perhaps?

You have similar parents to mine so this might help - make them use it and see for themself that its annoying.

 

Now $50 is a lot for a cooler (That GPU is at most 200 now) . Try to find something from a dead GPU or second hand in sites like ebay or something local. I bet you can find yourself something decent for 20-30$ and save some lunch money (assuming you have).

 

The third option you have is some modding by yourself. Remove the plastic shroud, throw away that blower fan, get yourself 2 120mm case fans and find a way to zip tie them to the cooler. After that find a way to wire them to a PSU connector (molex is the easiest way) or header of your motherboard.  I have photos of 1 GPU like this somewhere in my google drive - if you want I'll try to find it.

I think i am going to buy a used cooler for 970 although i think it will be tough but i havent tried it yet so i am not sure.

Already have 2x120mm front, 1x 120mm back and 2x 120mm top.

its just Define C is a minimalist case and it has closed front panel with a cutout on the sides for airflow similar to H440 only it has cutout on both sides.

Get a small job with your college, maybe a TA or something similar.  Help maintain a lab, run machinery etc.  It's a totally justifiable job that you can earn some decent cash for and you can get that cooler in no time.

Why?  It would be related to your studies, especially if it was paid projects with your prof.  A friend of mine made $1000 by running her classes machinery for a week, it got her school credit at the same time.

Cause my parents forbid to find a job they say u dont have to worry about money kek.

Glad I could help. Also you can use the fact that running hot, your card can die much sooner that one with better cooling.

I would get a job asap, where I live you are considered a adult and can make your own choice.

from my point of view heavily depending to learn everything in school is really bad.

 

Having a job or place to go and experience real situations is the best that can happen to you, or you can stay in school learn several years to "be good" (really just licensed) at a thing and find out it is the most boring thing to do on a daily basis.

It is your parents money right? so don't even bother, the GTX 970 is fine, if you want more get a job, it's that simple no parent should spoil their children the way I see you already got the card for free be thankful for that specially when just so many people have way inferior GPUs.

I am more into an anime with a good deep story like berserk,naruto,Conan and death note,etc

Cause modern animes are just there for a quick cash grab like exagerrating certain body parts to attracts man and thus gain more view if u know what i meant and i despise their existence.

I really want to have a job but they forbid it and i think they are not spoiling me they just wants me to focus on my studies by not worrying about money just yet and dont want something bad happen to me in the end because of it thus why they are so overprotecting me.

 

And yes 970 is fine even with my i3 6100

Yes but they are a bit pricey and i dont think my parent will buy it for me.

I can though get a used case but if my parents finds out i am using the money that i am not suppose to it for. I am dead
