Will an i5 8400 Bottleneck A GTX 1080?

No, especially if you want to game at 1440p. The 8400 is as powerful as an i7 6700/7700

At 1440, the 1080 will limit you substantially. 

 

You're fine and don't worry about bottlenecks within reason.

thanks for answering, i made sure to put in the resolution since i knew it plays a huge role in bottlenecks

Yes but it won't matter as you'll still be reaching a good usage on it, it is worth it, it is like me and my i7 6700 does it bottleneck? yes but it does not matter as I am getting my games max out on my display's refresh rate.

Personally speaking though I'd afford the i5 8600k to make sense of the z370 chipset, it should be relevant as gaming processor longer enough to justify it, people are getting 4.8ghz on Evo 212's.... minding this is the lastest IPC so yeah...

at 1440p there should be no problem with this combo

yea thats why im going with an i5 8400 instead of the ryzen 1600 since it gets higher fps on most games and works better on photoshop which runs better on higher clock speed cpus.

woah thanks for mentioning that, ive been trying to find a video on overclocking an i5 8600k with the hyper 212 evo but couldnt find any so thanks for answering a question i had in mind.

Not really, the only game that my 1080 struggles with at ultra is GR Wildlands (at max settings I could only manage 45-50fps). Most games like PUBG, BF1, Witcher 3, Battlefront 2, etc I could play at 80-140fps at Ultra settings.

all cpus are pretty damn close imho

Yea i was wondering why he said that because most of the benchmarks show you can max out almost any game with the GTX 1080 and still be able to play at a stable 60fps. Thats why i want it for my 1440p monitor so i can finally just load the game, crank the settings all the way up and start gaming

Because you're pushing more work on the 1080, that would likely be unused at 1920x1080. I didn't say anything about a GTX 1080 not hitting 60Hz at 1440, not even close to it.

Any CPU can bottleneck any GPU. Just depends on your performance vs visual quality expectations and the types of applications or games being run and the conditions they are being run in.
