The 1060 6Gb wins out in both cases and honestly I have way better experience with Geforce drivers for Nvidia cards than AMD cards.

Really, rx 480/580 8Gb vs gtx 1060 6Gb comea down to pricing, where I stand. The cheapest one is the one to go.

Ultra is stupid. ALWAYS.

DX12 would like a word with you :P

Polaris cards win in DX12 games, by a good margin.

Custom pinewood case, Corsair CX 600WRampage 3 Extreme, i7 980x (@4.2ghz) with ML240 Cooler MSI GTX 970, 24gb DDR3, 240gb OCZ Tr150 SSD + 2Tb Seagate Baracuda.

Advocate for used/older hardware. Also one of the resident petrol heads.

RX580. But it uses more power, produce more heat.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

Not by a good margin. (Not to mention, that most typical DX12 games are AMD-games. Hitman, Deus Ex for example.

However: Name 1 single Game, where DX12 is actually really worth using.

Look at Battlefield 1, which is made by Dice (one of the best developers for games. Quality wise). And DX12 is utterly Garbage there^^" On AMD Cards, it raises avg fps slightly but causes much more stuttering --> worse.

And in many cases: Nvidia in DX11 > AMD in DX12.

DX12 is still completely irrelevant today, there isn't a single game, with a flawless, very good implementation of it.

It will take at least 1-2 full more years, untill DX12 is worth mentioning / considering / even halfway there replacing DX11.

With other words: Nvidia users dont miss ANYTHING, by simply sticking to DX11 mode.

Fact is: Overall average across dozens of modern Games: RX 480 8gb / GTX 1060 6gb / RX 580 8gb are more or less similar fast. Maybe 2-3% more, or less. That's it.

Oh yea. GTX 1060 consumes 120 Watt.

RX 580 8gb consumes 200 Watt (more than a basic GTX 1080)

I would say they're quite the same. Nvidia offers some fancy gimmicks, but AMD is a great brand. Nvidia and AMD do things slightly different from each other (software interfaces) though mostly the same in function. I think you're just used to nvidia, as opposed to how AMD does things. Like Windows command line vs Linux command line.

i don't know but for him to say he is going to buy AMD like that, maybe it's because of it's monitor. freesync?

all the RX 4**, 5** are amazing cards for 1080p gaming, problem is the miners and what they have done to pricing. The 1060 6g probably will be the best choice once you consider all that, unless you have a freesync monitor.

If you can get a good price, I would say an rx 480 is an equivalent.

Current gen: RX580 or RX480. Although prices are heavily inflated right now, because of mining.

From the older gen The R9 390X or R9 Fury would also be around the same level and slightly faster but with increased power consumption.

No, I started out with an AMD card the R7 370 but once I got an Nvidia card I've really been enjoying it compared to AMD cards, with the features and software, compared to AMD. I've also had less pain with Nvidia drivers than AMDs.

You don't need the 8gb RX580 for 1080p, the 4gb is enough.

The 580 beats it in reality. Except for older titles where it barely loses out. DX12 is also growing

Will DX12 benefit gaming in both 1080p and 4k or does it lean one way or another? Also I've seen a lot of people saying that DX12 is going to take another couple of years before its really fully implemented. And sure AMD cards take better advantage of DX12 now but what will happen once Nvidia comes out with better drivers for DX12.

I'm sure it will benefit both, however due to how companies build their games, it may be dependent on the optimal performance the company is seeking.

DX12 will benefit in lower resolutions mainly, because of how it is designed as a low level api.

It does provide a better CPU Core utalization.

Tbh, mainly older weak CPUs like the AMD FX lineup does benefit from that.

Which is the literaly ONLY real benefit today.

If you use any modern CPU, like late intel or Ryzen models, you do not benefit from DX12 at all~.

Since DX12 as it is today (Who could've guessed it 1 year ago... lol), it's 98% garbage kinda... Most of the DX12 titles run better in DX11. Even on AMD. Some games do give a few % higher fps on AMD Cards, but way lower Min-fps (higher average, but bigger frame spikes / framedrops / stuttering).

Or let me not call it garbage. But almost every single DX12 implementation so far is not really good. Some are better than others, but none runs flawless, like Vulkan on Doom does (at least i don't know any issue there).

So... tbh, i can still NOT let DX12 count as any Argument at all. It was the big RX 480 vs. GTX 1060 argument 15 Months (!!!) ago. "DX12 is coming". "DX12 will be there in a few, then the RX 480 will let the GTX 1060 behind by far".

What is now? Nothing. RX 480 still behind in general, consumes more power, and with DX12 nothing happened. some games have it like patched over, but it's useless. Problems here and there, runs worse than DX11.

And in many cases, if you compare DX11 Nvidia vs. DX11 AMD, and DX12 Nvidia vs. DX12 AMD, yea, AMD is growing better with DX12, because AMD is quite bad in DX11.

However, take Nvidia DX11 vs. AMD DX12. In many cases, Nvidia still wins. And there is no visual difference between DX11 and 12.

My opinion: How it looks today, and the last years, you WILL have your GTX 1060 / RX 580 already replaced by the time, DX12 becomes somewhat relevant. This Day however, is most certainly NOT today. And it won't be this Year. Probably not even 2018.

Just check the Games you want to play, which is faster.

Check Prices, which is cheaper.

Check if you use Freesync, or want to buy one.

Then make your Choice in terms of Price / Performance.

btw: RX 580 8gb > 4gb. Period.

It doesn't just provide a bigger Pool for those Ultra textures in some Games + upcoming Games (Shadow of Mordor in highest textures kinda needs 8gb Vram.), but it is also 7-10% faster in general.

The 4gb Model only has 1750 Mhz GDDR5 Memory. The 8gb Model has full 2000 Mhz. Faster Memory = more fps, since most Midrange GPUs sit in a Vram bottleneck (not size. Bandwidth).

Take the 4gb version if:

- it's cheaper than a GTX 1060, because GTX 1060 > RX 580 4gb, in general. More Vram, less Power Consumption, faster.

- You use a Freesync Monitor (if you do, GTX 1060 doesn't help you)

- It is considerable cheaper than the 8gb Model

- You are perfectly fine in turning Textures from Ultra to High (if you do that, you are fine with 4gb)

the discussion kind of went all over the place, when it was important to know what monitor the OP has, what resolution he plays, what cpu he has, budget...

btw i agree that rx 580 8gb for 1080p is overkill. Period ;)
