I for one am outraged that they don't offer 100% off the price of a new iphone 8s with the return of a only slightly broken iphone 5, how selfish and money-hogging!

I've never stopped to think about it but I'm surprised more companies don't offer an upgrade program like this.  It's actually good for them:

• It makes it slightly more likely you'll return to them as a customer
• It takes what would have been used devices off the market, making people buy new
• It doesn't have to cost them a lot - certainly less than they'll make selling a new device because someone couldn't buy the used one
• They could even resell the used ones they get back and make even more money

So Apple has the prices on their store. They have a calculator so you can see how much they will pay for the phone. $425 for a iPhone 7+ 256GB in good condition, color doesn't matter.

I like how your lightly used iPhone 7 is a hunk of junk.... Purchases a phone less than a year ago and purchases the new one...

 

I think the main reason behind this is because it will help cut down on competition against Best Buy and carriers who make money on refurbished iPhones. This way Apple can sell a phone when it's released and #profit. Then turn around and release a new device, and take the 1 year old device that is paid for, and sell it as certified refurbished and continue to #profit.

 

The one thing Apple cannot do with it's mail in program is help their customers set up iCloud, transfer data, install a SIM, etc. Something that most iPhone customers have no idea about. Maybe they can mail in an app for that too.
