Major Apple leak: iPhone 8 info, IOS 11 and a new iPhone X

There's been a pretty major leak from someone inside Apple with lots of juicy gossip on the iPhone 8, IOS11 and maybe a new SKU called iPhone X. Someone leaked the IOS11 GM build.

Two news sites were given access to an as-yet-unreleased version of the iOS operation system.

 

The code refers to an iPhone X in addition to two new iPhone 8 handsets. It also details facial recognition tech that acts both as an ID system and maps users' expressions onto emojis.

 

One tech writer said it was the biggest leak of its kind to hit the firm.

 

Apple is holding a launch event at its new headquarters on Tuesday.

It's been suggested this was an intentional act of sabotage by a rogue employee

"As best I've been able to ascertain, these builds were available to download by anyone, but they were obscured by long, unguessable URLs [web addresses]," wrote John Gruber, a blogger known for his coverage of Apple.

 

"Someone within Apple leaked the list of URLs to 9to5Mac and MacRumors. I'm nearly certain this wasn't a mistake, but rather a deliberate malicious act by a rogue Apple employee."

The BBC claim to have verified the source of the leak which came from an Apple employee who provided a download from Apples master server

GM is a term commonly used by software firms to indicate that they believe a version of a product is ready for release.

Apple could not be reached for comment.

I'm still trying to figure out how Apple Pay is supposed to work with facial recognition.....because two of the three ways I can think of it working suck. 

• Do I have to open Apple pay, authorize it, and then touch my phone to the receiver?
• Do I have to stand on a chair so that I can look down at the phone while it touches the receiver?
• Will it be able to accurately do facial recognition at very high angles?

I still think Touch ID is better than Face ID. Just imagine how awkward it is to unlock an iPhone by aligning someone's face on it whereas with Touch ID, I can unlock my iPhone without looking.

Both would be ideal since they each have their useful scenarios, although, it doesn't look like Touch ID is going to happen. I have to assume they've gotten it to work accurately and securely at very high angles, otherwise it's going to be a pain to use it at all.

Judging by other face ID type phones and software like windows hello you don't need to align anything. Just a simple look from any angle for a brief moment works

I can unlock my iPhone from my pocket with Touch ID. I can look at my messages from my iPhone while it's sitting on a table beside me with Touch ID. If I'm driving and I want to change a song but I don't want to lose my focus while drivng, I could just handover my iPhone to the person sitting next to me and I can unlock my iPhone while keeping my focus. Those split seconds of looking at the phone to unlock it could already cause road accidents. 

 

You can't do any of those with Face ID.

Firstly why do you need to unlock your phone in your pocket? Secondly if you are looking at messages you are looking at your phone so your face would have been close enough to unlock it. I don't get how you keep focused? Face ID isn't going to take 3 seconds to authenticate. Windows hello works in less than half a second and they aren't getting rid of the simple numerical lock too. With raise to wake I see no need for touch ID. It will also help if you have gunk on your fingers.

I probably should have worded it better but what I mean is that, with Touch ID, I can check on my messages and notifications while it's sitting on a table and I don't have to bring my iPhone to my face.

A lot of these "problems" sound like complaining just to complain. For driving no one in the right mind would look at their phone or even attempt to use touch ID when in a sharp bank.

I knew the Microsoft task force here at LTT was a force to not reckon with, but man, the apple one is just as bad.

 

Seriously apple could not just have put one on the back? Or even embed it in the logo. Oh well, nothing wrong still, apple knows best, removing things for the sake of removing them just so they can wow is again next year when they bring it back because the tech will probably be ready by then. And it's really funny to already see people defending apple on the removal of touch id and praising face id as if it was Jesus second coming

They reportedly are removing it from because they couldn't physically get it to work in the screen, and it would feel like a massive step backwards having touch ID on the back of the device, whereas Face ID if implemented to work at high angles (I can't see how Face ID wouldn't be a complete disaster if that wasn't the case) would be almost always the better choice than rear Touch ID.

They're removing it cause Apple and they could remove the screen, tell iSheep it's better to carry a TV around with you everywhere, jack the price up $300 and they'd still break world records for sales figures.

 

They don't give a shit about their customers at all and they know there's a very large percentage of people who buy everything they put out no matter what.

 

There's very few businesse models that allow for the company to give the customer less and still charge them more for it.

Contrary to popular belief, people who buy iPhones do still care about their experience -- and that's why a lot of them are willing to pay. They've used Windows, they've used Android, and yet they still will pay more for an Apple product. So no, they couldn't remove the screen and charge $300 more unless they came up with a way to beam the images straight into your brain and allow you to interact via thought.

I would disagree, most people who buy new Apple hardware do so because it's Apple and the Apple brand says a lot about people's status.

 

If they cared about the experience then they'd buy Android and yet they still buy into the hugely restricted walled garden that is Apples ecosystem.

 

I genuinely know a lady who has 2 iMacs, one in her living room and one in her bedroom and these iMacs never get used, she has them solely so that people who come to her house can see she has Apple computers. When your entire business ethic has always been form over function you start to attract a very specific clientele.

That’s because people are paying more for a better user experience, which is what Apple continues to give us with their products despite the removal features, or perhaps, precisely because of the removal of certain features. 

 

Could the MacBook Air have been as light as thin as it was without Apple being courageous enough to remove features such as the cd drive and the various display ports? And guess what? Many people valued the thinner and lighter form factor far more than they mourned the loss of all those other features. To them, it was a worthwhile tradeoff. 

 

More isn’t always better, especially when you are not getting more of what you want, but instead, being saddled more problems to contend with. Complexity is not the key selling point here which customers value.
