Leaked guide outlines how Apple decides to repair or replace iPhones

A warranty guide was recently leaked which shows how Apple decides to repair or replace iPhones. This guide indicates to employees how they should approach issues with iPhones. The guide appears to be dated to March 3rd 2017 and covers the iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6S, 6S Plus, 7 , 7 Plus.

A new leaked warranty guide for Apple iPhones shows how the company determines which iPhones are eligible for repair under warranty. Conditions are outlined for in-warranty repair, out-of-warranty repair, and devices categorized as “ineligible” due to damage or unauthorized modification.

 

The types of damage that Apple covers under its warranty service includes debris under display glass or pixel anomaly, a misalignment of the FaceTime camera foam, or a single hairline crack to the front glass without an impact point. The VMI notes that devices with these types of impairments are covered regardless of any accidental or liquid damage.

 

Other damage, including LCD fractures, damage due to laser contact with the camera, extreme abrasion or puncture holes, multiple cracks in the glass, and damaged connectors are eligible for out-of-warranty service. Apple however, deems an iPhone ineligible for service if it shows intentional tampering or damage, is a disassembled unit or missing parts, contains non-Apple batteries, or is damaged “catastrophically.” Apple does note however, that AppleCare+ customers may be covered for catastrophic damage. AppleCare+’s hardware coverage does cover up to two incidents of accidental damage — with a fee of $29 for screen damage, or $99 for any other dam

Note: There is no evidence to confirm that this applies to iPhone SE warranty although I wonder how long Apple will continue to keep it around for.

 

Apple. what are you even doing? This is super anti-consumer and is bad for the environment.

 

It's never been a secret that tech companies generally offer terrible warranty and Apple is no exception.

little bitoff-topic: frankly, now that i've seen a man build is own iphone from parts all bouight at abusive sellers on the streets of china, there are no excuses for manufacturers to replace entire when it can easily be fixed specially when you have access to all the parts and can gear up you support centers with all the required equipment to even perform a complex task like fixing a broken display assembly

That has nothing to do with "terrible warranty" and everything I see on that Picture makes sense.

The warranty takes care of problems that are caused by the product, not problems that are intentionally or unintentionally caused by the consumer.

Assembling is the easy part of the manufacturing process. When you have to diagnose, disassemble and repair a specific part, the labor goes up hence the expensive repair cost. Changing out the whole part is the most time efficient way for the manufacturers since, like auto repair, pay is based on how much you work on per work day. I've also seen that video and he had to go to special vendors with special machines to assemble the parts he bought. And also, most of those parts are from broken iPhones, which, I hope, manufacturers aren't using on repairs.

Apple has terrible customer support and their warranty is frankly awful.

 

I have been a recipient of Apple customer support and my brother has been a recipient of Apple warranty in the past and it was outrageous.

The industry standard of not covering accidental damage is not consumer friendly and is not what OEMs should provide.

According to the sheet above, that falls under the "eligible for out-of-warranty service" category, meaning you can get that fixed but it'll be at a certain cost for the consumer.

 

All in all, I'm not seeing anything unexpected here... Not particularly consumer friendly, but let's face it, other companies are no different and offer little more.

I have been a recipient of Apple customer support and my brother has been a recipient of Apple warranty in the past and it was outrageous.

If a product is too fragile so that it obliterates if dropped then that's Apple's fault. The consumer is not at fault for poor decisions made by companies.

It's your fault for droping the thing, not the companies fault for not making the phone strong enough to withstand drops.

Inform yourself before buying the product instead of blaming someone else for your bad buying decision.

It is the consumers fault for buying it and handleing it wrong.

Either you buy the product, use it as it was intended and have your warranty in tact or you don't and you fucked up.

 

What you're saying is practically: "I used my blender to cut wood and it doesn't work anymore" and now you want the warranty to pay for the repair.

I don't know why you have so much animosity towards Apple but I'm pretty sure that the consumer is aware that buying an iPhone means buying a case a lot of times. Also, iPhones are fragile? Oh come on!

From this discussion, it doesn't bode well for the next generation of phones, not just Apple, since they are moving towards larger screens, almost encompassing the whole front.

If you have ever had an issue you know how it works. As long as the phone isn't utterly smashed they will give you one right there in the store or mail you one shortly.
