Nearly free GPUs coming soon?

coconuts4eva

https://www.coinspeaker.com/2017/08/26/ethereum-plans-metropolis-release-september/

Interesting. A difficulty bomb and proof of stake coming very soon which will make Ethereum nearly impossible for mining to be profitable.

I'd imagine that there will be a lot of 1070s and 470-580s on ebay in September. I mean ethereum isn't the only GPU mined coin, but it is the largest and there is no way that cards won't get dumped all of a sudden because of this.

But miners will dump them for free, because they won't want to recoup any money and just get out. The logic is flawless :P

About what? Needing 1070's for the Steam server? It's just a server with a few VM's that are meant to act as pass-throughs for GPU's. If you've streamed from your desktop to a laptop, it's much the same but works from VM that is closed and cleaned via snapshots, as if it were never used, once exited.

Dont forget that mining cards are heavily used. In terms of chances of failure, it could be just as high as some 5 year old cards that didnt mine.

Nah... to be honest these things are much more reliable than people paint it to be, a card will not be on the edge of death because a couple of months of mining.

Then again even if Ether~ gets hard to mine I really doubt miners will flood eBay with cards, new currencies rise every day.

No, it couldn't. I don't understand why people spread shit like this as if it makes sense. If you're mining 24/7, then sure, it will strain the GPU. However, with 580's or 1070's, they'll have only been mining for a few months at most, which is fine. That would be nowhere near 5 years of normal use. Mining load is the same as gaming load. The reason people think mining is really bad for cards is because most people buying several cards to mine with, making money, and then selling the GPUs cheap are running several cards in hot conditions non stop for months. For example, I've used a 970 to mine occasionally, because I've not been gaming very much recently so my GTX 970 will be under slightly worse load now, than it was when I was doing a lot of gaming.

On topic;

NVidia cards are often used to mine ZCash, not Ethereum, so if Ethereum isn't profitable for miners, NVidia cards won't go down. In fact, they might even go up in price if there isn;t another cryptocurrency that is profitable for AMD cards.

I agree as well - If they back away from Etherium, they may just jump to BTC or another emerging currency.

IF GTX 1070's used start going for under £200 (Stupidly unlikely) then I wouldn't mind giving SLI a try with Coffee/Ryzen. I remember having HD 7850 in crossfire with games that support it they were on par with a R9 290 however ran out of VRAM, it would be interesting to see what SLI is like.

They are down NewEgg had 1070's for $369.99 (Gigabyte Windforce) for sale Sunday and were still in stock at last check (I actually found them on EBay but the seller was NewEgg.com with a million positive reviews.

There were a bunch of 390x's 8GB in the $202-$250 area in the "Buy it Now" section. Besides Vega it's AMD's fastest all around card (the FuryX would be but runs out of vRAM as it's ipc is better than both Vegas).

Anyway, the GPU's are coming in, and most 290's and 390/x's were not miners as the crazy power draw (350 or so on the 390x under medium gaming load).

Good luck. Some sneaky cards that are pretty darn good you may be able to find cheap are the GTX 690 Dual (smokes a 780ti and normal 1050) and 6GB 7990's.

There is enough youth in this world, how about a fountain of smart?

How is this difficulty bomb going to reduce the price of cards? From the read it sounds like in the next couple of months Etherium prices could go either way. If the Metropolis upgrade does drive miners to the platform because of it's improved security, even at 3eth per block, then that means miners will need more GPUs to make back profits quicker if they find the security in it's improvements worthwhile. Also this isnt Etheriums' final form so the reward could go up or down. Etherium isn't the only mined currency. If it's stock in the crypto world goes down, that just means another will go up.

I'm personally hoping the mining world flops. Flood the net with cheap overused cards, idc. Even if it's only going to last a few months after being sold, I'll take a 580/1070 at under $150. Slap it on me!

Another concern you should keep in mind is those who don't know much about cryptomining. It's a niche, performed by tech-heads mostly. If the net gets flooded with cards all of a sudden people will see "Oh, look the latest and greatest just got a huge dump in price! Better snag one before they go out again!" That means there's no guarantee you'll be getting an unmined card anymore..not like there is much of a guarantee now anyway. Mom-n-pop shops will pick them up cheap and sell them back at a premium because most people won't know to ask if they were used for mining. So maybe they'll stay cheap online for a few weeks/months but then you'll be finding it hard to get a deal again.

I say if it goes down jump on it quickly. But don't hold your breath

just because the core clocks are as high as a 1080 doesnt mean youre getting 1080 performance. i can throw my RX460 clocks to 1352 and it doesnt perform anywhere near an GTX 1070. the premise is the same regardless of AMD or Nvidia. its still a maxwell titan. the architecture between maxwell and pascal is different and they handle the loads differently. im sure if you put your Titan next to a 1080 at the same clocks the 1080 would come out on top every time

Meanwhile you appear to be forgetting the performance that the Titan XM had. It was basically a 980 Ti, which performed as good as a 1070. Overclocking the Maxwell Titan nets quite the performance gain.

nothing to learn. ive been working with computers for 19 years, dont put me in the scrub pile.

you have a maxwell titan. 1080s are Pascal. titans run hotter than 1080s, so you put a block on it to keep it cooler to achieve higher frequencies. that means you boosted memory clocks, voltage, etc. a 1080 sits at that frequency comfortably under load with better heat tolerance (depending on the bin). your titan will become much more unstable the higher you go than a base 1080 will
