Intel Core i7 7700K, should I RMA?

Hi everyone, new guy to the forums here. I recently upgraded my rig from a Z97 Chipset paired with an Intel Core i7 4790K to a Z270 with as the title suggests, a 7700K. Cooling it is a Corsair H100i V2. I was using the V1 on the old build, and on the new build but recently decided to move to the V2. I knew going in that the 7700K is a hotter running chip due to Intel's poor thermal solution under the lid. I didn't think that it would be this bad though. I had my old 4790K overclocked to a modest 4.6GHz, and the temps never broke 70C with that cooler. At stock clocks on my 7700K with a new cooler running 3dMark TimeSpy, I'm seeing temps hit up to 85C. Ambient room temperature is around 26C. I've reapplied thermal compound three times. Twice with the old V1, and obviously when I installed the V2. I've got fans on both sides of the radiator exhausting air out of the top of the case. If you need more info, please let me know. Otherwise the question remains, should I RMA my CPU?

I would assume that you know to let the thermal paste sit for a bit and cure right? You won't get its full potential for at least a few days. 

The 7700K just runs hot

Most decent pastes are noncuring these days.

It's been about a week and a half since I installed the new cooler.

Did you remove the adhesive? The thermal paste isn't what causes high temps.

Edit: Read your reply on the post you quoted. I am really uncomfortable with de-lidding.

Set manual voltages, it's probably going up towards 1.3+ VCore on load. 1.25-1.28V is fine for stock clocks. PLLOC voltage is also something worth looking at, set it to around 1.13-1.17V .

My biggest thing is that I'd like to overclock, and actually did get it up to 4.8Ghz but the temps were spiking all the way up to 93C. Ain't happening.

I did but from my experience it does not matter.

 

 

Anyway, 85°C is still way under the TJmax so I doubt that they will accept RMA unless you bought the CPU recently and you can return it within few days of purchase like in some countries.

It's been three months since I got it... I've noticed higher than expected temps since day one. Should've done something sooner but I didn't start my quest to overclock until a couple of weeks ago.

Check what your temp is during gaming. Synthetics target the whole package creating more heat.

Okay will do. Should my idle temps be in the 50's though?

Depends on how hot your case is. You can always delid the 7700K and apply some TIM under the spreader. 

 

My CPU is at 34C and the house is about 22C.

Do what he said, please. PLL OC voltage being set too high is what causing the overheating problem.

For some reason I thought you said you delidded. But I was just saying it's the adhesive that holds the IHS that causes the problem. It's a common misconception that it's caused by the thermal compound they use.

I wound up finding a buyer for my 7700K and motherboard. I've got a Threadripper on the way. If I'm gonna have high temps, it's gonna be on a chip that calls for it.
