But maybe if it's a hamster that at the point of acquiring was extremely fat, then maybe... just don't feed it. Likely will die though at some point sooner, give it water.

The hamster should be able to find the food on its own. Something like an outdoor cage on the lawn.

Depends on what you define as free.

 

Any energy source will have some initial fixed cost to take advantage of it.

 

But an energy source that does not require "fuel" in a conventional sense, probably fits the meaning the best.

We actually did the math.

To produce ONE Horsepower you need 1658 to 2100 hamsters (there are actually studies on the topic).

IIRC a typical elevator requires roughly 32HP to operate at maximum capacity. Thus, you'd need 53056 to 67200 hamsters to operate an elevator without using conventionally obtained energy (be it from a power plant or a diesel powered generator).

 

You'll probably end up with a couple hundred thousand hamsters pretty soon though.
