the aim of a new bill out today by Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat in Virginia, and Sen. Cory Gardner, a Republican from Colorado. Their measure — called the Internet of Things Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2017 — is an attempt to force companies that sell wearables, sensors and other web-connected tools to federal agencies to adhere to some new security standards.

For example, lawmakers’ new proposal would put into law a requirement that vendors ensure the small, often screenless devices sold to the U.S. government can be patched with security updates. (It sounds like a given, but it’s not.) It also prohibits those tech companies from hard-coding passwords into the firmware of the tools they offer the feds.

The US government is looking to start to tame the wild west that is the internet of things. This is a great thing as anyone will tell you that there are millions of compromised devices connected to the met and with the idea of "Lets put a webserver of it" running through the world like crazy at the moment it's only going to get worse.

Yeah it would be better if it was passed yesterday. Most IoT devices have zero security and are the easiest to make botnets and connect to wireless networks

The shitstorm of IoT stuff hitting the market right now is incredible. Everybody wants their piece of the cake and what gets left out? Right, security. That stuff takes time to do right and test right and test again. 

 

Good to see something is being considered on a government level because this is getting idiotic at an alarming pace.

This has been a problem since the idea of IoT came about. People aren't clueless, they're just so stubborn that they stick to their beliefs even when they are proven wrong. A prime example of this is anyone who bought/supports home assistants like Google Home or Amazon Echo.
