How to install an AMD Threadripper CPU in its socket

So MSI released a nice youtube showing how to install a Threadripper in the new TR4 socket:

 

 

This SR4 socket is absolutely giant. As with all Lan Grid Array sockets, the SR4 socket has delicate pins on it. Due to the sheer size of the socket, CPU and number of pins, an elaborate installation mechanism has been implemented. Hopefully that will prevent bent pins.

New coolers are needed. But it is interesting it uses screw on mounts. I personally like that. No backplate installation nonsense.

What do you mean? IIRC it only has a ~140w TDP

What a nightmare this is going to be for people who make coolers. This thing is going to be expensive so the market isn't going to be massive, and that's a lot of R&D for a niche product.

IIRC Noctua will be offering TR4 mounting kits for existing coolers.

This was actually already shown in the de8auer delidding video that he had to take down, where he put the delidded CPU in the socket (The chlip was shown for a few seconds only).

Because of the 4 dies under the IHS, it'll be better to get the whole IHS cooled.

This is X399. Do you mean X299? And that is totally different because all the coolers that fit the regular LGA/AM3/4 stuff still fit the X79/99/299, all they need to include was a bracket. This CPU is so large in physical size that you need exclusive coolers.

But seriously this is interesting.  Rather elaborate compared to how it's been for so long, and interesting to see them putting pins on the CPU for ryzen and pins on the board for threadripper.

That's why I'm saying this thing is a nightmare, with Intel Extreme editions, which are far more niche than mainstream stuff, it was just a matter of throwing in a bracket. I can't imagine it's worth the R&D to make coolers for this thing.

Yes, yes I have. I just thought It would be possible, though not ideal, to have the IHS transfer the heat from the dies to a physically small contact surface.

Considering how threadripper will have (much) cheaper CPUs than X299 will (comparing across same-core pricing) then everyone should make coolers for threadripper.

it cant be that hard, all they have to do is stretch the baseplate(part of the cooler that is in contact with the ihs).

Well Noctua already has 3 models, and I expect there will be more from cooler master etc., but there will definitely be less variety.
