A couple of months back, Justin Schuh, Google Chrome's security chief, and indeed one of the world's top infosec bods, said that antivirus software is "my single biggest impediment to shipping a secure browser." Further down the thread he explains that meddling AV software delayed Win32 Flash sandboxing "for over a year" and that further sandboxing efforts are still on hold due to AV. The man-in-the-middle nature of antivirus also causes a stream of TLS (transport layer security) errors, says Schuh, which in turn breaks some elements of HTTPS/HSTS. It doesn't use up a lot of system resources, does passive scanning, and is updated almost weekly with new AV database. Besides, that same article also mentioned that the researcher who discovered this had also found a flaw in MS security software. Quote last year he found a flaw that could be exploited to remotely disable the protection engine used in many Microsoft antimalware products. And without a 3rd party AV, you can't permanently disable Windows Defender (unless there's another flaw the allows it to be turned off....). You can trust your system without any protection. I rely on common sense as my first line of defense, but I refuse to give up my AV as my fall back position. Any security is about layers, and AV is just one more layer. Remove it and you weaken the whole. Posted July 27, 2017 I did have a free trial from them on a prebuilt PC, but I never bothered to pay to continue the service, I generally trust them though. A 2013 laptop with a regular sized battery still has better battery life than a 2017 laptop with a massive battery! I think this is a testament to apple's ability at making laptops, or maybe how little CPU technology has improved even 4+ years later (at least, until the recent introduction of 15W 4 core CPUs). Anyway, I'm never going to get a 35W CPU laptop again unless battery technology becomes ~5x better than as it is in 2018. Apple knows how to make proper consumer-grade laptops (they don't know how to make pro laptops though). I guess this mostly software power efficiency related, but getting a mac makes perfect sense if you want a portable/powerful laptop that can do anything you want it to with great battery life.
