$200 Wireless Oculus Rift in the works for 2018

Bloomberg are reporting that Facebook plans to release their standalone, wireless Oculus Rift headset in 2018 for the much lower price of $200.

 

This seems to be 'heard on the grapevine' rumour information, as the article contains a lot of - 'a person familiar with the plans' sources. However, it seems a sensible suggestion that Facebook will be aiming around this price arena, which is not too far from Samsung's Gear pricing, however without the need for a $700 smartphone to power it. 

 

It is reported to be using a Snapdragon processor of some sort but no confirmation on that from Qualcomm.

 

This seems to be an entertainment focused device, with suggestions that people will carry them for watching films on planes, much as you might with a tablet. 

 

For gaming, it will likely be more powerful than something like the GearVR, but obviously a far cry from the full PC VR experience of the current Rift. Importantly, it will not have the positional tracking technology.

 

What do folks think about a $200 VR media consumption device? Could this slot into a gap in the market?

I heard this before from somewhere before...or at least the wireless rift/vive part.

It's different and Vive has one planned too. They aren't the same kind of VR like the Vive and Oculus rift are. They are more samsung VR garbage. Also the Vive does have a wireless addon though

Honestly I don't see a problem with watching a movie on a tablet when I'm on a plane... who cares if the guy next to you can watch the movie with you? Besides I'd feel very uneasy blocking my eyes and ears in a public place with complete strangers around me. You're pretty much asking for stupid jokes, or worse, being robbed. Vr headsets are pretty uncomfortable in the long run (meaning more than 30 minutes) too, hardly ideal for a long flight. Not to mention watching a low framerate movie 2cm from your eyes is bound to make you sick.

 

As for games, I think you can forget it - even if it comes with all the sensors and refresh rate required for an acceptable experience the wireless latency will probably hinder the experience.

yes, and if the oculus 2.0 is around 2 years away then the vive 2 probably follows the same timeline, so by then we should have high end gear that can do it.

Id take this over a tablet tbh. I like my gear vr but the problem is its too low res, if this could fix that so i dont have massive pixels hindering the experience id deff buy it.

Well you kinda should of expected Facebook to come up in a topic about Oculus Rift :D

 

As for the topic, sounds like a last ditched attempt to get consumers bought into VR tech to me. Much like 3D, VR was a fad that came and went without ever really making any significant impact. Valve, HTC & Facebook are now pissed that they invested billions into developing these headsets and so far have had very little ROI so they're doing the standard thing of releasing a watered down cheaper version.

 

I doubt it will work, anybody who wants a VR headset right now has already got one, be it full fat (vive or rift) or a watered down (cardboard, daydream, gearvr etc) variant and I don't see a $200 device marketed as something you might use twice a year (when you're going on holiday) changing that.

 

Listen guys, when even Luke is admitting that the VR fad is over then its safe to assume the VR fad is over.

This could be really cool if it has enough power behind it. I don't think I would buy it since I already own a Rift; but, it might be a cool gift to buy for someone who has never tried VR before. I just worry that this is going to take away focus from the Rift 2 development.

As for the topic, sounds like a last ditched attempt to get consumers bought into VR tech to me. Much like 3D, VR was a fad that came and went without ever really making any significant impact. Valve, HTC & Facebook are now pissed that they invested billions into developing these headsets and so far have had very little ROI so they're doing the standard thing of releasing a watered down cheaper version.

 

I doubt it will work, anybody who wants a VR headset right now has already got one, be it full fat (vive or rift) or a watered down (cardboard, daydream, gearvr etc) variant and I don't see a $200 device marketed as something you might use twice a year (when you're going on holiday) changing that.

 

Listen guys, when even Luke is admitting that the VR fad is over then its safe to assume the VR fad is over.

VR is doing well. Devs are investing more and more in it (eg. Bethesda now going all-in with Doom, Fallout and Skyrim), and install bases are growing. This is another boost to the install base, and it seems to have been a big boost. Lots of new people buying Rift headsets.

The thing I'm uncertain about is the software support. It's not going to be able to run the PC VR stuff, but it will (probably) have more power than GearVR and other phone-based VR. But will there be enough content leveraging that extra performance? Or will it just run the same phone stuff without taking full advantage of what the standalone form-factor offers?
