4 months is quite slow, where i live it can earn itself back in 65 days or so. what i meant is how its sustainable in the long run, it feels like people chasing a ghost. the only reason its worth money is because other people think it is worth money when it has very little real world uses and is quite unpractical beyond trading it.

A block gives you well in bitcoin network 12.5 btc, and the transaction fees that each transaction has

does each block do the same transaction amount worth in btc or do they just do a set number of transactions regardless of the worth?

So it is 12.5 btc until 2020 where it will reduce to 6.25 and keep halving until zero, at this time finding a block will generate the 12.5 btx reward plus any of the transaction fees that you pay. Transaction fees can be nil but it would take longer to propagate in ledger

Transactions can be between 1 and well unlimited as long as the miner can hash out that block.

The reward is currently 12.5 BTC, each block and only have 1MB of transactions (each one is a few lines of text)

Because they have more computational power per $ (until prices start go crazy).

Basically, AMD cards have lower gaming performance than Nvidia cards at comparable general computational power because reasons (you said TL,DR :P). Their price is typically in line with their gaming performance, which creates an arbitrage opportunity for miners when the mining craze starts.

 

Put differently, if Nvidia and AMD had the same price in terms of dollars for mining power, AMD cards would be bad value for gaming.

yea okay, but what if transactions become too small to make a profit off? is that a possible situation?

Pretty sure energy costs more than what you can mine, but the value might be in the hopes the currency goes up a lot once you eventually stop mining. The worry there might be the currency would also disappear or crash in value so it's probably as risky as it gets

The big reason was the way the cards were designed.  For the simplest explanation, AMD used lots of lower powered computational parts, where Nvidia used a smaller amount of high powered computational parts.  With most crypto-coin mining, the speed of the individual computational units was largely irrelevant (the slowest ones were still plenty fast).  But having more computational units allowed for better distributed computation.

 

So the end result for 3D graphics was the same (within this argument).  But for using the card for a purpose it wasn't designed, the AMD cards simply worked a lot better.

 

Super ultra ELI5:

Nvidia made a sledge hammer, AMD made a bunch of small hammers.

When breaking 1 rock, they worked about the same.

When breaking a lot of small rocks, the larger amount of smaller hammers was more useful.

Both were initially designed to break one rock. (video output to a display)

Crypto mining is like breaking a ton of small rocks.

huh thats pretty cool tech. how does it know if you're the only machine? how do mining machines discover each other? even p2p protocols use some centralized system to discover each other right? like trackers for torrents. how does that work?

that doesn't oppose what they said. a company isn't worth anything unless value is assigned. how is value assigned in a free market system? demand and supply. the system relies on the principle that if something isn't in demand it isn't wanted and thus doesn't have value.
