Talking about piracy in general, broad details, is acceptable however the posting or discussing pirated/hacked/cracked or otherwise nefariously obtained content is not. This includes Windows content, games, hackintosh, etc. Also discussions regarding ways to avoid or block legitimately installed monitoring/tracking software or the like is also not allowed.

per the site rules, broad details are acceptable, what I don't know is if naming specific sites, crosses that line as it might introduce people to a site they didn't know about which could directly lead to piracy

Steam + Netflix (and similar offers) have basically outclassed torrents at this point, it's why I think they'll continue to shrink in popularity but won't disappear since people in weaker economies are very unlikely to move to even affordable digital content.

Netflix's content selection is just terrible, especially if you want to see anything that was released in the last 1-2 years. There's Hulu/yahoo view for currently airing content and HBO go/showtime/amc to supplement Netflix, but it all adds up pretty quickly.

Popular TV shows take like a year to appear on Netflix, and iTunes is greedy at 3.50$ CAD per episode.

Completely agree. Like people always say, piracy is a service problem - if Netflix would increase their library, get rid of geoblocking, and maintain their (relatively) low price, I would imagine a significant chunk of pirates would simply use Netflix, or equivalent service, for the ease of use. Of course, that wouldn't help those in countries with a poor economy, unless the entire economic structure of the world changed, which it won't.

I actually agree with you: the selection is kinda terrible. But I am usually not the one to make this case given my taste in movies (refer to my avatar) so when it comes to more popular movies I defer to other people and Netflix seems to be quite popular.

In the end even if it ends up being expensive, between Netflix and the other competitors the selection is probably on the "good enough" side for many average folk to just avoid torrents 9 out of 10 times while I continue to curse my lack of luck to find Jodorowsky's latest movie, Endless Poetry, regardless of service provider legal or otherwise.

From my experiences abroad, it seems that most publishers(?) do a simple currency conversion without taking the overall economic balance into account.

Netflix selection used to be a lot better tbh, had mythbusters and a lot of other cool stuff.
We only stick with it (my family) because my parents are both not that great with tech and they use it on the PS3 downstairs to watch stuff.
Because tbh the selection is kinda awful now.

I make bad life decisions.

Yeah more or less, I mean it's not a huge geographical difference but here in Canada a new game costs about 80 CAD (60usd ~ 82 CAD). So as far as I'm aware that's more or less what happens.

Ah, damnit.

There are a lot of series and shows that are either unavailable in Australia or locked behind a paywall (Foxtel, which is often $30+ a month on contract) or only on DVD or Bluray ($20-30 for one fucking show is NOT worth it)

idk

I'd love if my anime series were only $30! Unfortunately, they're usually split into 4-8 episodes costing about $20 each.

I personally think I have a pretty normal taste in movies and even I find a lot of stuff missing. And it's even worse with new movies since it takes forever for it to get them. I think it ends up being good enough to outweigh the inconvenience of dealing with a hard drive or having to find and download a movie. Plus a lot of people don't know about or feel comfortable pirating.

Not to mention that Netflix is horrible with how they put up movies and shows and then take other ones down...  Part of what I prefer about Hulu over Netflix is that if there is a show with a lot of seasons, I'll most likely find all the seasons on Hulu.  Netflix, not so much...

One movie. One ~1h movie. But oftentimes there is a movie rental kiosk near me, and there is always free movie codes floating around for them, so I use them instead of pirating. For an example, the new Assassins Creed movie is fucking $29 on Bluray

idk

I use Netflix more for Series now then Movies, most modern movies suck so I don't care if they don't come to Netflix, I also have HBO Go for free for the better part of the next year so long as I don't kick DTVNow to the curb for being full of shit.

You should count your pennies that you do not collect anime then. One series cost me $200. It was my favorite series, so the price was worth it (it's original DVD collection before the Blu Ray release would have exceeded $700).

I do make every effort to purchase the anime I watch. That said, I used to pirate a bit in the past, back before I had something called a job, and wasn't at all willing to ask the parents to pay for something frivolous. Looking for torrents was scary business though. It's obvious that pirate torrents reside in the seedy part of the internet. I also ran torrents in a VM and scanned the files OCD style to ensure they were safe. This was in 2009.

Before that, I recorded whatever I could get my hands on from TV onto my trust camcorder (that could also receive a composite video signal).

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

Yep, and no website was required then, same with eMule.

On the other hand, there was audiogalaxy, which brought things to a different level. But it was so naively blatant that it essentially was a takedown waiting to happen. But the fact that it even existed tells you something about the old days' Internet :D

Hell, I'd pay 29.99$ for a larger selection of titles.

Streaming is cool and all but 720p is the max and subtitles are broken 95 percent of the time. Plus dat 10-seconds Netflix rewind, which I love.
