Disappointed with LTT lately

First please read: I like LTT. I support the channel. I promote the channel. I bought a mug and a t shirt and I generally enjoy the content. I am simply expressing my disappointment with the way the channel has been lately. I was wondering if anyone else felt the same way. OK

 

I like LTT and have been a fan for awhile. Lately though, those thumbnails have been annoying with his stupid expressions. The click bait titles and click bait thumbnails have seemingly gotten worse.

 

To me its like they forgot that it was their honest hard work and heart that sold a lot of people to the channel.

To me anyway it seems since he has hired like 20 people to run channels with 5 millions subs total (both Techquickie and LTT) they appears to be solely motivated to sell views not quality.

 

Let me be clear: There is NOTHING wrong with them making money.

 

I do find it to be a bit foolhardy to hire so many people when the channel really is not THAT big compared to other tech channels of similar size.

 

Here is my Apples to Oranges comparison, if you'll bear with me... 

Look at Austin Evans - 2 millions subs and he works with 2-3 other people. They get almost the same amount of views per video ie - Videos up for 6 days 640,00 views for Austin vs Videos up for 7 days get 725,000 on LTT.

 

YES I realize LTT makes videos more frequently, but my point is, Austin and LTT are not that far off from each in views per and total subs. Austin , to me, has stuck to his guns, and makes a consistent product. LTT has gotten away from thier core and it really feels like they make videos for kids almost. Teens and young adults.

 

Its not like I think they "sold out" I don't. But I feel like they will do anything for views whereas before it felt that videos were produced with a "how do I make this the best it can be" mindset .

 

I hope LTT can get back to the core. Maybe layoff a few people. I don't know. It seems since they brought on all these extra hands from the 5-10 original staff the need for $ obviously went up and content quality went down. Its all about getting  views less about what they are actually making

They are on a slippery slope to becoming the Buzz Feed of tech vids. I hope they figure it out. I am rooting for them in the long term.

I do agree with you, but it's not going to change. Linus has his business mentality and YouTube has been slipping lately. Good luck on them.

Thing is, there's a limit on how much content you can get out of covering new devices/innovations. So to keep things growing, and to attract a wider audience, LTT had to diversify and move into more entertainment-focussed content. I'm not always a fan of it, I mean I'm not so enamoured with the personalities of LMG staff that that's all I need to draw me in, but I do appreciate the amount of effort that is being put in so their videos aren't just scores of case unboxings and reading out spec sheets. It's not easy to do.

I forget who it was (I think Annie Lennox) who said that it's really easy to write music that appeals to a small group, it's much harder to appeal to everyone.

I just don't like how they were in the Ryzen review. Quite misleading with it and insulted intel in the process. 

I get that rooting for AMD overall is a good thing (promotes competition and a more free market blah blah, we've heard it a thousand times) but that video was both misleading and unfair to both companies in different ways, probably to avoid hate from all the AMD fans. 

This is not the Linus that I know. The Linus I know promotes accurate information (even if most of it is basic knowledge) no matter how ugly the truth may be at times.

 

The thumbnails and stuff I don't really care tbh

Yea I agree. I wasn't even bothered by the Ryzen 5 thing that much because I came to expect it. I just saw a lot more people start to realize this channel built with so much heart and passion is slowly turning into the thing we all dislike from the "other" big channels

I think Linus said on this forum that he's using those thumbnails because they attract views. I honestly don't care.

 

About the titles, I do agree. I still like the content but some of the titles, like the Ryzen 3 and 5 previewed, was misleading, even after it was changed.

I don't know if I'd say lately, but there is more content being released that I'm not interested in. There's a little too much nonchalance around certain topics, technology and some stuff they're not even addressing that more serious tech channels discuss.

I like Channel Super Fun, I like the WAN show in its off-the-cuff style, but I sort of wish that their regular content would be...for a lack of a better phrase, "more serious."

Wacky ways to implement tech is fine and everything, but personally, the jovial nature just isn't something I associate with tech reviews or tech applications. A few mixed in here or there are a great way to change up the pace, but I feel that more and more of what gets released just doesn't hold my interest the same way.

For me LTT used to be good and informative tech with a bit of entertainment on a side.

Now they seem to focus mainly on the tech entertainment and being a lot less focused on the actual tech sauce.

 

I still like and watch all of their videos, but the main source of tech sauce I seek on other channels now.

Like it or not, Linus and them have to sort of go down this route. They're running a costly business and ad rate on Youtube with the recent boycott is far lower than normal.

The channel page, with all the stupid bloody faces and clicky titles, actually makes me cringe now. So yeah, I can't judge their business direction but the feel of the channel is definitely a turnoff these days.

Linus have 3 youtube channel, Austin have only 1. So linus needs more staff to delegate task to edit videos.

I mean, with all the respect in the world:

Complains ads are difficult to get without making the videos more abroad to catch more audiences and the clickbaits are part of the process to gain more advertises now so it is the logical move.

Has Luke advertising Dollar shave while having a completely poorly made beard which clearly hadn't seen a shaver in a while, kinda a poor thought out move in my view when you're advertising something you clearly don't use or even worse used but didn't do any good?, what's with that? complaining how hard it is to have new advertises but they sometimes don't seem to care to the ones they have? where's the logic?

I think that Linus has a good idea when it comes to marketing (fanboying and such) , teens are the weakest audience. 

 

they tried to prove that they are mature, but they don't know that much, so, in the end they are just being used but they themselves didn't realise it. (I'm not talking about LTT videos here, but in general. )

 

And I think that there is no way they are going back. Something had changed, we don't know what it is, but it is definitely different. 

This is not the 1st time people posted a thread like this, and this is not gonna be the last one either. I remembered some staff explained the decisions they made, and why they made it, and it had shown that they are not gonna change their positions any time soon. 

 

The forum is better. But the quality of replies had declined quite a bit. However there are a small portion of people here are really objective, and you can definitely learn a lot from them.

I agree, it's been frustrating lately. Vague clickbait titles and thumbnails are annoying, and in fact I've made a point of it to try not to watch channels that do this, which is the reason I avoid people such as Casey Neistat and for a while neglected even watching Jayztwocents, though I've since come around on him because his actual content is pretty good. Not knowing what your video is actually about unless I watch it is really off-putting to me. But I can get over that for LTT's awesome content. However I feel like the quality of the content itself has decreased recently. I hate to say it, but I think it might be partially because Linus isn't writing as much of his own content anymore. Everything seems more scripted and phony, more sensationalist and less logical and informative. The video from the other day on that MSI prebuilt is a perfect example of all of this.
