Should a less than 16 year old be worried about SAT and deciding on what college to go to?

AniJan

My mom was ranting about how I should be thinking about SAT and college early, because my school's education is insufficient. I may be moving to California, and education-wise, California is better than Illinois.

Now my question is:

Should a less than 16 year old, in 7th grade, be worrying about SAT, deciding what to do in the future, and what college to go to?

Some will say not to worry, but having a future goal or at least a direction to aim towards is not a bad thing.

The SAT is not an end all toward getting into college.  (Myself, I never used my SAT scores nor took the ACT to get into college).  Note though, colleges will look at your High School transcript and GPA average.

I know that.

However, expecting a goal from someone that young is just stupid. Our goals change as time passes by.

How so?

Myself, when I was 12-13 years old, I was already thinking ahead about different goals to aim towards.  The trick is to not have just one set in stone goal but have many paths and backup paths if the central path fails.

NO! Maybe when you're 14, but most people decide when they are 15-16.

Being worried, no. Thinking about, yes.

It's always good to plan for the future, and have some idea of what you want to do. That said, I know many many people that went through 2, 4 and even 7 years of university just to have a complete change of heart once they graduated and now do something completely different to what they spent years and tens of thousands of dollars studying.

Now, if you want to go to Cambridge, Oxford, or another foreign school, might be good to start saving unless your parents are quite well off ;)

Most important thing, don't forget to enjoy your childhood. Go out and play. Get into trouble while you can. Once you reach your late teens everything gets a lot more serious.

Yes you should be thinking about it and trying to do good in school, but you should not worry about it.

I started thinking about my future when I was in middle school, but I changed my mind like 4 times

You will probably change your mind several times between now and your adult life, but it is important to have some idea of what you want to do.

depends on culture, needs to prosper, and goal acquiring ambitions.

pre college/university, understanding right and wrong vs fact and opinion. in college/university testing those answers to a life plan while grabbing more knowledge to strengthen your background to surviving in life.  early preparations towards the post high schooling cannot really hurt, other than detract from other life events that might interest you in that time period. if you are not footing the college payments, then you kinda have a 'contract' with those that are paying the tuition. even a discussion about a trade school could be beneficial. less emphasis has been put on a trade vs four+ years of college, but a lot of trade positions can be quite rewarding monetarily and goal oriented.

wait four+ years to make $35k or two years and make $55k (welding). less tuition and making a wage quicker with less payback if using a student loan.
