Well, Zen's cache hierarchy is completely different to Intel's, and it's no secret that cache aids with SMT/HT. Perhaps the difference in MT score is due to AMD's potentially superior cache implementation? As for the single core performance, it's unlikely to be matching Skylake/Kaby IPC. It's best to assume this chip is clocked higher than Kaby's stock 7700k. Either way, it likely won't clock as high as an overclocked 7700k, so I wouldn't worry about Kaby being defeated on that front.

As I've said before, based on what we've seen so far I'm gonna say RyZen's IPC is ~= 95% that of Skylake's, give or take a few percent.  And, if the AMD slides are to be believed, the 1800X beats the 6900k by 9% in multi-threaded when matching it exactly in single-threaded, which to me can only be explained by superior SMT tech, however that might have been achieved.

Most of us are very familiar with what TDP is.  The problem is that AMD uses "TEE DEE PEE" out of context when needed.  It just depends on what they are talking about when they switch back and forth.  

 

Notice in the first video during the Ryzen event, Lisa Su used TDP in the context of power consumed implying that Ryzen is upwards of 45w more efficient during similar workloads.

 

The problem is that Ryzen is actually draws similar power under load as seen in the second video.  If you didn't know which was which, you'd assume they were the same chip based on total system power draw at load.

 

TDP is a useless especially when trying to compare between the two companies.  The way Intel rates TDP is completely different than that of AMD.

 

AMD makes is sound good though don't they? Hell, the average user would believe that it does the same work with 45 less watts. Great marketing.

Even more so proves my point. And many people even here buy K chips just because they have factory OC, and never OC them.

Then they're wasting their money. Another thing to keep in mind, if something performs 5% worse, but costs 10% less (or 50% in some cases), it's worth it.

Oh, I was talking in general, not Ryzen. And if it's worth it is really a subjective thing if we're honest. I don't need a 6900K, but someone might have picked it because they do need it, so $1000 is worth it to them. Anyhow /derail.

To everyone pointing out that they've compared overclocked RyZen to a stock 7700k and thinking "well what's the point, you could just overclock the 7700k too", yes, but, this is still useful information, and still impressive.  Even a stock 7700k is a powerful performer and for AMD to be able to match it, even if it does take an overclock to get there, is great news.  It shows what kind of performance we can expect out of RyZen, and so far it looks good to me.

 

Also keep in mind that theoretically the 1800X would overclock even better.

Agree about i7 4790k running hot even on stock settings.

If we can OC Ryzen on air/water, to get same single core performance as i7 7700k at stock, we are golden.

i7 7700k is 4 core, while Ryzen R7 are 8 cores. You also don't see many i7 6800/6850/6900/6950X running at 5,2GHz.

 

And Ryzen seems to have same performance as Intel 6900k at same clock speed. So you get IPC of i7 6800/6850/6900k. And that's damn impressive for AMD.

To be fair, almost everyone does this. Intel does it (though they've recently switched to Scenario Design Power) but still mistakenly confuse TDP and power consumption. I don't know if I can blame Nvidia for this, but a lot of reviewers that review Nvidia GPU's also list their TDP as their power consumption, which again, is a misrepresentation of the cards actual power consumption.

That said. Cool stuff really. x99 is absolutely terrible at low power usage (because it is explicitly designed not to care about that stuff lol), but still good showings by AMD.

If the 6800K is running at 127W that is below it's TDP. An OCed one to 4.4Ghz is around 200Ws and 4.4Ghz isn't hard to get with an AIO.
