Put A 4K Display In My Gaming Laptop? Run games at 2k for the same performance?

So I've got a laptop at work with a 4K dispkay (well, 3840x2160) and if I run at half the resolution for demanding games, I'll have exactly 1920x1080. But for normal use, I can use it at 4K or on games with lower demands, 4k.

Good idea/bad idea? Assuming the laptop works with it, I'd assume it would. If not, I'll just swap it out again :P

Would a 2:1 scale look noticably worse?

Changing displays to a different display that isn't designed for your laptop won't work very well. Playing games on a native 1080p vs 1080p on a 4K will be much better; playing on lower resolutions doesn't look very good.

1080p is 1/4, not 1/2 of 4K by the way. 2K is cinematic 1080, not 1920x1080

I know its 1/4 the pixel count, but each individual resolution is exactly half. I meant to write 2k in quotation marks :P

Anyway I'm pretty sure the laptop will work with it. Both use an eDP interface.

From my experience, using lower resolution than the native one for a monitor doesn't look ugly as long as you don't go below the 96 PPI mark (which is what's considered 100%). I have a 4K 27" monitor and playing games at 1440p on it doesn't seem to have any noticeable ugliness because 1440p is the "standard" resolution for 27" monitors.

It kinda depends on the screen size...

Running games at 2560x1440 would be terrible because of the horrible upscaling that you'd need to do?

Sig under construction.

I can't really run games at 1440p with a GTX 960M, but 1080p is fine. So with a 4K display, I could run games at 1080p with a perfect 1:2 scale

I guess, it's just that the title says 2k...

I was making a SLIGHT joke, because half of 4k is 2k, Half of 3840 is 1920, half of 2160 is 1080

1/2 times 1/2 = 1/4. 2K is an actual resolution (2048x1080) and is NOT 2560x1440 or even 1920x1080.
