I5 4670K + GTX 1080 or 1080 Ti = bottleneck?

AleksanderK

Hi, so I've got a PC with an I5 4670K, 16 GB of DDR3 and a GTX 780. Will my CPU bottleneck a GTX 1080 or a 1080TI (probably a +25% perfomance gain)? I'm planning to use a 144 FPS 1440Hz display.

Btw, I play all types of games, including CPU-heavy one like TW3 and BF1

Also, will it help if I get a nice cooler and overclock my CPU to about 4.5 GHZ?

You mean a 1440p 144hz monitor?

Oh, yes, of course, it's a typo, I meant a 1440p 144hz display xD

1080 Ti is not yet released, not even a date of its release is known yet. And when it does expect it to cost about $1000USD, going on the trend of how overly priced the GTX 1080 was from GPU makers of Nvidia's suggested retail price.

I don't or have never owned the i5-4670k so I can't say for sure. My best guess is that yes it would bottleneck even a GTX 1070 in CPU intensive games, but probably not by much. And yes getting a big Be Quiet or Noctua air cooler heat sink and overclocking will help. That being said maybe go for a GTX 1070 or RX 480 and wait for Ryzen and go for a new build? Not saying your system is bad, just throwing out the idea.

No, that CPU is completely fine and won't bottleneck whatsoever. In almost any case scenario you don't need any more than an i5 if you're just gaming. If it's a heavy CPU bound game I'm not to sure but most games that you listed will be fine.

I'm quite aware that the GTX 1080 Ti has not been released yet, but I'm planning to wait until they release it and then upgrade my PC. I was actually going to build a completely new system, but I really hope that I don't necessarily need to

if you render 1440p the i5 will do great with a GTX 1080 but you won't get as high FPS as you potentially could with an i7 CPU...so i'd say if you aim for around 90FPS ULTRA you should be fine but if you aim more for like 120FPS HIGH/ultra then your CPU will fall a bit short sometimes.

At 1440p you won't see bottleneck. (like huge one, small bottleneck is always there).

it wont be a huge bottleneck but there will be some. you could always overclock and then upgrade cpu later on.

Won't help. My 4690K @ 4.6 ghz was bottenecking my gtx 970 like crazy in BF1.

For most games, you wil lbe fine, for heavy cpu usage games, there will be a huge bottleneck even in 1440p

You don't NEED to upgrade. But if it was my money I'd get a GTX 1070 instead and go for Ryzen when it comes out (assuming it's as good as it seems) or go for a i5-7600k. That's just me though, but even if for the time being you just got a big air cooler heat sink, and overclocked your CPU to get some extra performance you could carry that over into a new build down the road.

According to various benchs from Digital Foundry, even the 6600K oc to 4.5Ghz will bottleneck 1080 when try to game at 1440p on AAA games, switching to a 6700k or 7700k and they saw 15-25% increase in performance.

Simply, 4 threads are not enough

CPU: Ryzen 2 2700@ 4.0Ghz    Mobo: Gigabyte X470 Gaming 7 Wifi    Cooler: EVGA CLC 240    GPU: GTX1080 FTW DT @ 2113Mhz   PSU: EVGA 750W P2

4 threads are not "perfect" nowadays for recent games you need an i7 to run it 100% smooth.

An i5 does well the job tho, just not perfect like it used to do in the past
