Holy $H!T Ep. 14

I'm disappointed in this pedestrian config. You should have a 40GbE x4 card for 20GB/s total network throughput and put 12 drives on each CPU for 25GB/s total throughput in the server.

Those drives are just amazing, and seem pretty darn reliable if you ask me, with a TBW of 10^16.

How would this setup work with operating systems like FreeNAS?

Meh, I know of an intern who destroyed over $700K in networking gear because they were too lazy to properly carry three different linecards. They smashed the pins on the bottom and then tried to shove them into two different chassis, destroying the backplane of those too.

Oh, and I almost dropped a single linecard for an A99-12X100GE that's worth over a million dollars because somebody decided to stand too close to me while I was pulling the linecard out.

Curious what the estimated cost is for that flash storage. If its comparable to nimble or compellent and even EMC all flash arrays.

When Linus mentioned he got 24 Intel Nvme drives, I thought, that server has 24 pcie slots?! Then when I saw it was going to be installed in the front. Pcie slots in the front and they are hot swap too?!  Think of the all convenience with them front hot swap pcie slots.  Then he took one out and it was a 2.5" drive. I totally forgot intel made 2.5" nvme drives. xD

I don't know, didn't really feel like a "Holy $H!T" episode to be honest.

Thus, from the war of nature, from famine and death, the most exalted object which we are capable of conceiving, namely, the production of the higher animals, directly follows. There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved.

Two questions:

How fast is the RAM?

How can the speed of the drives exceed the speed of the RAM and still be usable at that speed over the network?

PS: Bonus question:

Install the fastest and largest amount of RAM and set up a software RAID of multiple RAMDisks?

Who thought that NVMe couldn't be set to RAID?

Also, this makes me feel kind of bad that I saw 5.25" floppy disks as fast when I used them...

You can raid them in Software RAID. Not sure I'd trust my company's data to a Windows software RAID though.

A SAN really wasn't an option though?

Its 3 minutes of him walking around the warehouse being "oh look how goofy and relatable I am" 2 minutes of him "oops I knocked over these SSD's, boy Im so goofy" then like 30 seconds of him actually describing the server and setting it up. Dude, what the fuck. It literally felt like watching a toy channel. Im this close to unsubbing.

Go back a couple of WAN shows and Linus shows how much they are each, do the math and you'll know :).

P.S. The usable performance isn't even close to what any of the enterprise storage arrays can offer, but that is more down to the configuration than hardware.

What inventory software and scanners do you guys use? does anyone else know of any reliable solutions for hardware inventory?

Thanks!
