My personal experience with teachers would suggest most of them is idiots until the late 40s-50s when their life-experience overtakes the limited and not always correct information of the school textbooks.

LMG has 15 people employed. They have a separate script writer and researcher that looks up and writes scripts for Teckquickie. The reason i say Linus and Luke doesnt understand what they talk about, is because THEY READ AND MEMORIZE THE SCRIPT. Yet if they knew about all the things i did, which isnt unreasonable to assume given how long they have been working within the tech industry, then some alarm bells should have rung during rehearsal of the script.

 

So either, they dont know the subject they are talking about good enough to spot the errors. OR, more worringly, they DO spot the errors but still proceed with production of the video. Thus deliberatly ignoring errors.

 

But here is the kicker. It isnt just Linus and Luke here, there is the researcher/script writer, there is Linus/Luke and there is the editors... there is THREE lines of "defense" here. And very often, too often for a "fact show", none of those three lines of defense catches the misstakes. 

 

The worst, the absolute worst of the worst part, is that Techquickie is supposed to be educational, but LMG has only ONCE, as far as i know, reuploaded or annotated a video because there was something wrong it in. Once... That means they are notified of errors, and i bet they are as i arent the only person who would spot these errors. Yet they do not react.

And that Sam, that is appauling. They do not react even when it regards "educational" content.

 

So either, staff at LMG has no clue about tech. Which would be rather alarming given the industry they are in. OR, they dont care. Pick your poison.

I am not sure what videos that were used in schools (might be one of the videos which are good) or what teacher showed it (might be a teacher that doesn't know any better), but just because they are shown in schools doesn't mean they are all good or contain accurate information.

Except it isn't. If the video you are watching contains lots of inaccuracies then you might be building your understanding of something on entirely false information. It's like building a house on quicksand. It might look solid and work to begin with, but sooner or later the entire house will crumble and all that time and effort put into building the house will be wasted.

It is especially important to get all the info right at the "person with zero knowledge on the subject" level, because that's the foundation for the rest of the info they will learn.

 

If anything, "it's meant for beginners" opens the videos up to more harsh criticism, because if the videos were meant for people who already had a firm understanding of the basics they could spot inaccuracies by themselves. It's the people with no prior knowledge which will be defenseless to misinformation.

Well this is one area where I can only be a bit critical towards Linus, no his networking and server knowledge is not that good. As an long term industry professional I watch basically everything he does in horror but the weird thing is I find it highly entertaining. It's a good laugh for me and I applaud him for getting stuck in and trying, maybe every server/network video needs a bottom banner that says "I have no idea what I'm doing" just to make that 100% clear to viewers :P. It's clear to me but of course that's always going to be the case.

 

The one and only purchase I can say was a good choice, an extremely good choice, was the Eaton UPS. Eaton is the absolute gold standard top of the line company when it comes to UPS's, the brand I would buy above all others. There are other good ones too but one in particular is guilty of having tons of rubbish that isn't worth anything, looking at you APC.

Well to be fair, I think that packet is just accidentally flipped. It is correct if you read it right to left.

There are far bigger issues with the video, like being all over the place, not actually explaining why MAC addresses exists (it kind of touches on it), completely misunderstanding how NAT works, misinformation about how your ISP manages subscriptions, and so on.

Now, before I begin, I'll preface this by saying that I do not believe the misinformation he spreads is intentional, only a result of a poor testing methodology, or lack of understanding prior to conducting the test. I genuinely believe his intentions are good, just sometimes poorly executed. That being said, let's get on with the examples.

 

The first big piece of misinformation, is their video regarding the performance of ram in video games. Benchmarks start at 2:00.

First is Far Cry 3, with 8x MSAA at 1080p, on a GTX 660 Ti, a card that cannot handle these settings at all, and is the obvious bottleneck in this situation. Next we have Metro Last Light, very high preset, 1080, 4x SSAA, and the same results. Barely playable framerates from a console standpoint, with the GPU being the bottleneck. Notice how in those benchmarks, hes looking at the average framerates, and not the minimum framerates. Ram speed mostly helps when CPU overhead is involved, and certain pieces of a game can have higher amounts of overhead than others. Faster ram will alleviate how low your dips are. As we all know, minimum framerates are the most important.

 

Now, let's analyze the second piece of misinformation in this video. "High frequency ram tends to sacrifice latency, as you tighten up latency, you tend to sacrifice frequency". This is the telltale sign that someone has never bothered to touch their memory, because it's simply not true. As frequency increases, your RTL (Round Trip Latency) changes. The more bandwidth you introduce, the lower your latency (unless you manually loosen your timings). You can increase frequency, loosen primary timings, and tighten tertiary timings, and come out with both high bandwidth AND lower latency. He only looked at XMP kits, their frequency, and primary timings and then gave out this information as if it was a fact. Granted, I know most consumers won't bother to touch their timings manually, and I don't blame them for that, It's still neglectful to spread that rumor around, as it makes the people interested in doing so, less likely to do it.

These are just 2 of the videos that stand out to me personally, as I consider myself an enthusiast on both topics presented in those videos. I am sure others can find examples in other areas. 

 

What we take from this, is that humans are not infallible. We are all prone to mistakes, and the ability to learn from those mistakes is what separates us from most species. Linus is not the be all, end all when it comes to tech, and should not be treated as such. People need to take his videos at face value, and research for themselves, from multiple sources, to see whether or not the claims he makes is true.

Add DHCP to that list. Also Hubs, Switches and Wireless handle Ethernet frames completely differently so saying your home router keeps track of your MAC address then using wireless in the diagram is just wrong, wrong in the sense for what is trying to be explained.

Well said. No body can be an expert in everything and if you try you'll likely end up being a master of nothing, which is a problem for a tech channel as they are basically forced in to this situation.

Granted, I know most consumers won't bother to touch their timings manually, and I don't blame them for that, It's still neglectful to spread that rumor around, as it makes the people interested in doing so, less likely to do it.

This seems to be a common misunderstanding of what CL is. Logan also used to make the big mistake of assuming that CL10 at 1600MHz is the same as CL10 at 1333MHz (in terms of ms).

It's pretty weird how so many people get this wrong when a simple Google search for "what is cas latency" will explain it very clearly:

And that's why you employ a variety of people with different skill sets. Kind of like how Anandtech has one person who is specialized in GPUs, one for CPUs, one for smartphones, and so on. LinusTechTips has 15 people and from what I know only 3 actually write the material that ends up in videos. How is that even possible?

 

Also, they are only "forced" into this situation because they want to make 10 videos a week or however many they make. "But they need to make that many videos to pay the bills!", yes but they only have so many bills because they have way too many people employed. "But they need all those people so they can make 10 videos a week!"... and so on...

I am ONE man, one fucking lone man, and i can spot the errors they make every now and then.

 

LMG has 15 people employed. They have a separate script writer and researcher that looks up and writes scripts for Teckquickie. The reason i say Linus and Luke doesnt understand what they talk about, is because THEY READ AND MEMORIZE THE SCRIPT. Yet if they knew about all the things i did, which isnt unreasonable to assume given how long they have been working within the tech industry, then some alarm bells should have rung during rehearsal of the script.

 

So either, they dont know the subject they are talking about good enough to spot the errors. OR, more worringly, they DO spot the errors but still proceed with production of the video. Thus deliberatly ignoring errors.

 

But here is the kicker. It isnt just Linus and Luke here, there is the researcher/script writer, there is Linus/Luke and there is the editors... there is THREE lines of "defense" here. And very often, too often for a "fact show", none of those three lines of defense catches the misstakes. 

 

The worst, the absolute worst of the worst part, is that Techquickie is supposed to be educational, but LMG has only ONCE, as far as i know, reuploaded or annotated a video because there was something wrong it in. Once... That means they are notified of errors, and i bet they are as i arent the only person who would spot these errors. Yet they do not react.

And that Sam, that is appauling. They do not react even when it regards "educational" content.

 

So either, staff at LMG has no clue about tech. Which would be rather alarming given the industry they are in. OR, they dont care. Pick your poison.

For one the LMG staff are either writers, video editors, or camera men. With the exception of Luke and Linus being more of the presenters. Their job is to edit videos not learn about technology. They also don't memorize the scripts. They use a teleprompter and do you really think Bill Nye the Science Guy is a scientific genius? It's called acting and learn how to spell genius and use proper capitalization. Linus isn't a Phd in Computer Science. He is entertaining and if you feel he is not factual enough go to some other channel.

i already did go to another channel. Infact i unsubbed from LTT back in spring. LTT and its sub-channels has no information that is valuable to me. They have NOTHING to teach me, other then "how to be wrong yet surprisingly arrogant about it".

 

And unlike you, i do not need to attack peoples grammar because my argument isn't good enough to stand up to scrutiny. But please, if you think it's fine with LTT serving false information to the general public, please, do justify it. While you're at it, please try justify a teacher teaching you false information. because... there is a bit of hypocritsy that should be adressed, and by trying to justify both, you may see the issue at hand.

Have you watched TV before? Or used the internet. Linus is one of least mis informative person out there. Don't confuse bias with misinformation either.

Linus on the other hand, holds no degree of higher education to make him any more qualified than the rest of us average Joe's when it comes to computer hardware. His experience is just that, experience. The very same experience all of us are capable of having, and is just as prone to errors as we are. 

 

I don't understand your defense either. When a channel has "Tech Tips" in their name, factual information is expected of them. Entertainment should come second to the facts, should it not? I understand you are a fan of their work, but being a fan of their work should not in any way leave you unable to criticize them when they make a mistake.

Oh, I don't discount experience at all. I only used that as a means to counter his Bill Nye analogy. I too have no higher education beyond a high school diploma here in the US, and I still see myself as a "knowledgeable" hardware enthusiast. Me saying "his experience is just that, experience" was mostly meant to imply that he was not taught, but learned through experience.

 

I just don't understand this blind devotion towards him. I am sure he is a nice guy, but he has made a few mistakes that needs to be touched upon, and potentially corrected to ensure others don't run with it. There is nothing wrong with pointing that out, but some people treat it as blasphemy.
