Microsoft and Google attempting to kill off Flash

You_are_a_cunt

flash-plugin.jpg?width=960

Quote

For years, tech writers have been announcing the impending demise of the Adobe Flash plug-in. It's still not dead heading in to 2017, but Microsoft and Google are getting ready to introduce changes that will accelerate the process.

Quote

They're (Microsoft and Google) going to disable Flash by default in their browsers. You'll still be able to play a Flash-based game or stream a video, you're just going to have to tell your browser that you really want to do it.

This is a very, very good thing. There are a number of reasons why, including improved battery life on laptops. The most important reason, however, is that Flash is still a cybercriminal's favorite way to attack your web browser.  2016 was a banner year for Flash-based exploits.

Keeping Flash up-to-date still isn't enough to keep you safe. It's time to shut it down.

Quote

Starting in January, Google will flip the switch on "click-to-play" in Chrome. When you land on a page that wants to load Flash content, Chrome will alert you. You'll be able to approve or deny that request, and Chrome will remember your choices on a per-site basis.

Source

My take on it?

ABOUT FREAKING TIME

Just as Lee Mathews (article's author) stated, Flash has been a cesspool of bugs and vulnerabilities and it's been years since it became the go-to point of entry for application and web hacking. It's time we let it die off. We have alternative technologies that do everything Flash does, but better, faster, less vulnerable and with less resource requirements. YouTube's move to HTML5 proved this.

I'm curious if Firefox, Opera and Safari will fall in line with the initiative, but I'm not holding my brearth either way.

Now to start lobbying for more antiquated technologies to get killed off. Java, you're next on my list.

It's being used in Android so unless Google decides to drop it for something else (not likely since their entire ecosystem relies on it), and it's also being used in other applications in the medical industry - which is why I think it's not going to go anywhere.

IIRC Android uses pretty much its own SDK and Java is just there as a base-language and it's compiled into Dalvik opcodes, not java byte code; the APIs are similar and you don't have many of the J2SE ones

Firefox already announced that they will kill plug-in support by the end of 2016. I don't think they plan to do any transitions. They'll just kill it off. They say that the problem is not just Flash but other plugins causing security issues for users. This is normal, as companies making them, don't properly support their product.

It's still very much Java on the outside.

It would be like me saying C# needs to die, even though C# as a base language isn't being used in it's original form in a lot of applications that use it but with their own implementation of it.

I don't want C# to die just to be clear.

Java is used on Android for apps development, but Google is making its own language called Go based on C/C++ (close to C#), Java will eventually be killed off there too. However, Java won't die quickly. It is widely used in many places and academics.

JavaScript, which is what this forum uses, has no relation with Java.

Java was the bane of my existence when I was studying Computer Science in Uni. Everything that could go wrong would go wrong and when something worked, I had no idea why. The next year we started C# and everything was doing what it was supposed to do. Hell, my best work was done while I was deep into a second bottle of scotch on New Year's Eve.

I don't think C# will die. Many devs making PC applications with C# loves C#. Heck, Unity Engine uses C#. The problem is that C# isn't really growing. It will grow if Windows 10 Mobile becomes thing OR more users uses the Windows 10/XBox One Store and download  games and apps. There is a significant market increase, which will push UWP content on it, and the best language for apps on this platform is C#.

I'm afraid Windows 10 Mobile has an expiration date due pretty soon, which makes me sad.

Damn I'd love an HP Elite X3. That phone is a beast. Add the lapdock and it just became a laptop replacement. Or the desktop dock and it's a desktop replacement.

Too bad people are pointlessly jaded regarding Windows Phones :<

I personally preferred C++ when I was learning how to program, but since I started working where I do C# grew on me. I think my future game project will be done in Unity since I've been using C# so much.
