Rumor: AMD licenses their gpus to Intel

Rumor has been going around where AMD might license their igpus to Intel and future Intel processors might carry AMD radeon graphics. In the past, HardOCP's Kyle Bennet reported that the AMD Radeon Technology Group (RTG) was in talks with Intel for providing license to patents of its IPs for future Intel CPUs.

Today, Kyle Bennet says that both companies has fallen into agreement for a deal:

This is quite surprising news as AMD were always seen as competitors to Intel offerings. But it looks like Intel squired some technologies from AMD to incorporate in future Intel CPUs integrated graphic solutions. This is a win-win solution. Intel gets to have a better graphics solution, and AMD gets money for Intel using their technologies.

 

 

Don't know how this will work out, but if it does then its better for us (the consumers).

Still gonna say this isn't any different than Intel licensing x86-64 from them. They're just going to implement whatever AMD technology they license in their own way, not actually use a "Radeon" GPU.

 

Like how people who makes ARM don't necessarily implement a Cortex A73.

I'm optimistic about this sort of stuff. I imagine a day when I won't need large graphics modules to play most games. As it is Zen APUs are supposed to have polaris architecture graphics in them. I'm kind of curious why they would licence it to one of their biggest competitors, but maybe it's a move by AMD to make their graphics more prevalent than nVIDIA. On one hand when corporations work together like that the consolidation can make better products, but at the same time large conglomerates can be too powerful.

Interesting but believable. They don't slap their sticker on your gaming console, so why would they care if your integrated chip was gaming on their behalf as well.

Nope, sadly it doesn't work like that. They're not going to be using AMD tech, simply patents.

They won't be using it in that way. With the way modern GPUs currently are, there's no way for Intel to have an iGPU without licencing patents from either Nvidia or AMD. They currently licence from Nvidia, as per a court order, which expires in March.

There will be no change to the way their iGPU performs.

Intel cpus are currently faster than AMD's and with them getting Radeon Graphics it will be a lot better. If that does happened, how the heck is AMD going to sell their APUs? This is also similar to say some of you who works at a computer place and a customer comes in and wants to buy a new PC. How do you sell them a dedicated graphic card when onboard can do the exact same thing.

Intel owns x86, AMD owns x64. The both license to each other.

I stewed on this a little more.

 

Also I'm going to leave a rant here so bear with me.

 

People really need to learn how to approach rumor mills because the sources that OP mentioned link back to the same source and therefore are not valid as alternate sources to "confirm" the rumor

 

For example the rumor that GameFreak is working on a Pokemon game for the Nintendo switch has like 20+ websites reporting it, all of them sourcing EuroGamer.

 

So anyway, I wanted to leave a link to another article from a website called Seeking Alpha, which I believe is an investor website. Respecting that decision, I won't copy and paste the entire article (I registered using a throwaway email). The short of it is they took apart WFFTech's reasoning why Intel would go with AMD, which is based around one thing: Intel already has a licensing agreement with NVIDIA that's set to expire March 2017. However:

• The agreement is that Intel has access to NVIDIA's technology until March 2017. After that, Intel cannot use anything new NVIDIA makes
• Intel still has unlimited access to NVIDIA's technology
• Intel has yet to use any of NVIDIA's technology in their GPUs.

But I will quote this one piece from the article:

Unlike what has been assumed, Intel is not "under the gun" to conclude a GPU licensing deal. Indeed, it's hard to see why Intel would pay AMD for a GPU license given that it still has access to a wealth of Nvidia patented IP that it has yet to exploit, and which, from this point on, will cost INTC nothing.

However, there are possible motives for a licensing deal beyond access to patents. Intel was never granted by Nvidia technical assistance in developing GPU technology, or the right to use the Nvidia brand in its products.

In many ways, technical assistance, even specific circuit designs, might be a more valuable form of IP than the patents themselves. AMD may have offered both the use of its brand and its assistance. A closer collaboration between Intel and a GPU supplier would probably result in much more capable built-in GPUs than what Intel currently offers.

I mean, maybe. But who knows. it's been up there for a while (a day or two at least) when leaks of this sort of thing usually get taken down within an hour. So I actually don't know if it's real or not.

Maybe  Intel would get licence to  the current gen iGpus  and the zen based iGpus  are much better(think R7 260 and Rx460)  so Intel gets  their "best ever Apus  from team blue"  and AMD  keeps the title of being the best APUs  For budget systems

That would make sense as Intel GPUs are buggy and driver neglect doesn't help. AMD could assist big time.

I am replacing my GPU so I am on iGPU for now. I don't mind performance hit but I do get occasional strange flicker and black screen for few seconds. Random and annoying.

Know what, I think Game Freak and Bethesda should collaborate on the next Pokémon game. 

 

For most non gaming, and even light gaming usages, newer Intel graphics don't pose much of a problem aside from buggy drivers. This isn't the dark ages of the Intel GMA series, where even low end cards of several years back blew away the latest GMA model.
