Canada asking feedback on expanded surveillance powers

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/canada-software-encryption-backdoors-feedback,33131.html

In the wake of both the U.S and the U.K expanding their surveillance powers, Canada is asking feedback from their citizens on expanding their surveillance powers to include mandatory decryption, software backdoors, and access to basic subscriber information without a warrant.

Quote

Mandatory Decryption

After mandatory decryption and encryption backdoors failed to pick up steam in the United States, but succeeded in the UK with the passing of the “Snoopers’ Charter,” Canada is looking to give this idea a try, too. The government is now asking for feedback on whether it should legally force individuals and organizations to decrypt material.

This implies that either companies would have to forgo using end-to-end encryption that allows users to encrypt communications with their own keys, or they would need to have some kind of backdoor that would allow them to bypass the end-to-end encryption.

Mandatory Records Storage

The Canadian government is complaining that some services don’t store records long enough, asserting that this is a problem for law enforcement. It also complained that some internet services that are used by Canadians “operate beyond the reach of Canadian law” simply because they have no local headquarters or servers, and thus Canadian law enforcement can’t legally request data from them.

The Canadian government seems to be considering a law where it could both mandate that all service providers, including VPN services, store customer records for a longer period of time, and that it should be able to request that data when needed.

I feel that personally, as an American, that mandatory decryption is going too far, as well as instituting backdoors. However, I do like the fact that the Canadian goverment has allowed its citizens to comment on these important issues.

but really, if it's for some shady private messaging app that routes through russian and iranian internet servers, then sure, but for things like facebook and gmail, being able to keep records of that or your serach history is just bull - i laughed when i saw what the NSA was doing to america, but now that laugh has turned bitter

Well to be fair; I and the MPs are actual people, where as you're just a pleb.  Live content in your squalor, pay your taxes, and pay no attention to the man behind the curtain.

Open source encryption program >>> put AES encrypted message in attachment of an email >>> send to other user >>> recipient uses their encryption program and password to read the message == rudimentary end to end encryption.

With a bit of time investment, even the issue of a nanny state tying the hands of companies can be bypassed via a few knowledgeable users. If one were to open source code for heavily encrypted chat servers that can be accessed even on mobile devices, the UK will have some fun tracking down every encrypted server out there.

Unless you're 18 you just get to sit back and watch as the adults around you let the world burn because, you know, the terrorists use encryption or some meaningless nonsense.

You can provide feedback here: https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/cnslttns/ntnl-scrt/thm09-en.aspx

Questions are loaded though so it's a bit difficult to answer them. I basically just ranted about how stupid weakening encryption is and pointed out the many problems with doing so. Not to mention that people that know what they are doing will still be able to remain somewhat secure with something as simple as a VPN.

Well I wish 'em luck then. The best they can do is block ports and well that worked very well for my highschool... until I realized I could just change the port on which the VPN connects on :P
